I recently purchased a cute burnout tee from Rue 21, and have become enamored with the trend. Burnout, or burn out, tops are made of a cotton and polyester blend fabric, and then the cotton area is burned out creating a faded, soft effect. Often times the burned out area is done in a pattern. Its supposed to be similar to the effect of wearing an item thread bare. The result is a sheer design within the shirt. I find the ones that are done with a specific pattern the most interesting, as shown above in my photos.
Burn out tops are great for layering and therefore can offer up some versatility in the wear of the shirt. You can vary the colors underneath a burn out top to create different effects and contrasts. They are also great for summer as they allow a lot of breathability. I suppose you could also wear one of the tops with just a bra or nothing at all underneath for a more daring fashion look.
As you can see from my list, there are a variety of options of this trend to choose from. Various colors, patterns and styles of top. Some paired with beautiful graphics and details like crochet backs or rhinestone studding. There are even a pair of burn out leggings!
If you get a chance, check out this new trend. Try one on at a local store. They are so soft and cozy, you probably won't want to take it off!
As for local stores that may carry this trendy look, Charlotte Russe and Wet Seal seem to have a decent variety of options. It looks like even Target carries a few options in this trend.
Browse through the list and see if this appeals to you. Do you love the look, or find it too shabby? Which ones are your favorites? Do you like the basic burnout or the patterns? Do you like the pairings of graphics and detailing, or the more subtle looks?
Happy Shopping!

I have a burn out tank that I got from Old Navy a couple years ago. Very cute, and yes, super soft. I'll have to check out some of the new things out now and see if anything can compare the to tank I already own. : )
The burnout look has been a part of fashion for some time....in velvet, but not in other fabrics. Sometimes I think maybe it started as a mistake, because if you iron a velvet garment without turning it inside out or with too high a heat setting, you get burnout. I think the patterns are pretty and it is very comfortable. I think you have spotted a trend that will grow over the next year, so maybe even Walmart will carry some burnout items. Great Blog.
Are They for when you come home BURNED - OUT or For Exersise Burn - Out??
OR JUST A FANCY NAME TO ADD TO YOUR WARDROBE ?
US GUYS JUST NEED A TEE SHIRT AND SHORTS WHEN WERE BURNED - OUT. lol
I'm so excited to get a burn out item now! HOW COOL. I'm going to check out what Target has. I'm all about SUPER SOFT and comfortable! Thanks so much for sharing:) This was great!
I haven't seen them at Target yet, but I do like them, so soft and comfy. It's a style "trend" I actually like. :)
