I'm not quite sure how to source this idea (or how to do a tidy link), but I thought it was really cool so I'm sharing anyway.

From kayliafisher.tumbler blog : cut squares of newsprint larger than nails. apply a base coat of polish. when nails are completely dry, soak them in alcohol, then press newsprint on nail and slowly pull off. top coat to seal.

Check the links for the very simple instructions. I think it looks particularly cool over the gray, silly putty-ish nail color.
