Sometimes I have one of those mornings where there's just so much on my plate that I don't know how I'll get any of it done. I've been having one of those mornings every morning for the last week, y'all. I'm excited to read about what all of you do to stay powerful and focused (and also to do the things I do to stay that way). Here's what I do.

1. Wear statement jewelry. Sounds kind of silly and shallow, no? But I think putting on a really bold, strong piece of jewelry is one of the best ways to "fake it until it's true." I like my jewelry to be a reflection of who I am inside and, when I'm having one of those days, putting some on reminds me who I am every day and how great that is.

2. Read great books. I think reading is critical to being informed about the world and my place in it. I devour everything and anything I can get my hands on whenever and where ever I can. Books are the most beautiful place in the world to lose yourself and find yourself and come out remembering how fun life is.

3. Wear high heels. Some people find high heels oppressive but I feel just the opposite. I feel strong and womanly and like I can celebrate all the things that make me different from men.

4. Bargain shop. If you've ever read ANY of this blogazine, this one is probably a no brainer. I'm obsessed. Finding ridiculously cheap things and making them look amazing and sassy is practically a point of pride for me. (Everything you see there for $100! And only that much because I was so in love with that red see-through thing, haha.)

5. Work in small business. I don't talk a lot about how empowering this is and that's kind of ridiculous. It's the biggest part of my life, I work with and for my mother-in-law, and we're women in charge. I'm exposed to a lot of different people and ideas and a great deal of beautiful things and I take pleasure in all of them. What's better than that?

  • New dresses make me feel great and I love wearing heels too! I wanted to get the red dress too, if its the one I think it is, you have to do a post with it. I get pretty overwhelmed with everything I have to do lately too, but I think the company of friends and family in the little bit of time I do have is helping me to make it through. I wish I had more time for reading, because that makes me feel good too. I have been slacking and haven't read anything besides school books since like march or april. • I love this post! You are awesome and I wholeheartedly agree with your points. It may seem shallow, but I think the important thing is just to surround yourself with things that you love and be happy. Report Spam Posted by kitsune01 at 12:02 PM on 07/11/11

  • I agree, esp. with the high heels. It's hard not to feel a little more confident when you're standing just a little bit taller :) And those heels make legs look a little slimmer and more toned to boot. Report Spam Posted by agauthier79 at 7:35 PM on 07/11/11

  • I agree with everything you said on here! And if it's silly to be thrilled that I spent a whopping $3 on something that I love and feel amazing in, then I'm 100% guilty of being ridiculously silly. Report Spam Posted by gregsgal at 8:55 PM on 07/11/11

  • i love this post!! i've got to agree with you, from my 5' tall, high heels DO makes me feel more strong & powerful! Report Spam Posted by laroxane at 7:56 AM on 07/12/11

  • I agree with @kitsune01 to surround yourself with the things you love. In your case that is what you are doing. Very inspiring blog that I can relate to. Thank you for sharing this with me. =) Report Spam Posted by chic_bebe (chicbebe.com) at 1:02 PM on 07/12/11

  • Haha, YES! I totally agree with the fake it til you make it bit. Statement jewelry or bold make-up or something usually does perk me up a bit. Although I love high heels, I'm terrible in walking in them so it is usually wedges or flats if I have to stand for longer than 20 minutes and walk more than 10. And book love! I still have several boxes with my parents. My goal is to have a big enough flat in London that i can make a study lined with big ol' bookshelves. At the moment I'm working for a big company and while sometimes it is great, I don't get the satisfaction I did when I worked with a smaller place. Still, putting in applications so who knows where I'll be in another year! Great post! As always, love reading them! Report Spam Posted by elenalee at 10:51 AM on 07/13/11

  • Since I first met you here on K, you have been my role model in so many ways. I could spend hours going through your booklists, and books, imho, are a very good expression of so many characteristics of the reader. Your choice of shoes, clothes and jewelry. You always look AMAZING because you always look uniquely beautifully YOU. I love your "CAN DO" attitude....might seem silly, but you remind me of a female Indiana Jones. Finally, you are one of my top women entrepreneur models. Class and sass....and you write so well, too. AWESOME FANTASTIC BLOG. Thank you! Report Spam Posted by paws72 at 9:09 PM on 07/16/11

  • I think loving what you do for a living is huge and most people don't have that pleasure. It sounds to me that you not only love it, you live it. You lucky lady! I, too, read everything around me. Sometimes those things are just take-out menus or cereal boxes, but none-the-less . . . I agree that wearing something significant can make a huge difference in my day. Sometimes it's a conversation starter, sometimes it's a mask, sometimes it brings out the warrior in me. Sometimes it's simply a mental check-in; looking at it reminds me that there are things in my life that make a hard day worth it. That's the beauty of fashion it not only expresses personal style for the outside world, it reminds me who I am. People that don't think fashion & style matter are missing out.
