Recently I fell across a list by Kaboodler, Kristenleanna. I think it was the name that caught me. Her list is "Love Love". Since I seldom end up where I intend to be heading...I shrugged and gave the list my total attention. (For those who don't know, I am a true believer if we trip across something or bump into someone,it or they are going to play an important part in our lives.) Her list tugs, and I recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it.

There was one particular item that resonated deep within my heart. All through the following night I kept thinking about that item. As soon as I could, I went to the site, a company called Story People with items from "Storyland".  Imagine my surprise, to find the art I am so desperately trying to make, and the words I have had in my heart, waiting too long to put them into an inspirational book.....were right in front of me.

So unique and personal to me, I had to share them with all of you. I don't expect them to have quite the same effect on you as they did on me. I do think you will like many of the items. There will be a list on my "spot" named, "Pictures Tell Stories", and items from this blog will be the first section of the list. The name of the list comes from one of my favorite songs, though I tweaked the name. The actual song has a line, "Music tells Stories, and often makes pictures"... . If any of you recognize the song, I would love you to let me know in a comment.

Now, I face a dilemma. My dream is  THIS ART,  THIS MAN'S BOOKS, THESE WORDS.  What should I do now??? All suggestions deeply appreciated. What a wonderful/ disastrous find! Looking forward to your comments. My next blog will return to Paris, for a look at my FAVORITES from the show.

A quick final note. As I mentioned  this company's items come from what they call "Storyland".  Ever since I first met my husband, I have pondered over taking his last name. It was a point that almost made me want to run in the other direction. For 30+ years now, my name and his have been the same. Yet, I still hesitate to tell people my last name. Soooo, comments on this are also welcome. If you don't already know, our last name is "Sweetland".

  • That is a WONDERFUL last name. I wish I had it. It is beautiful, cheery and innocent all at the same time. I can hardly wait to see Pictures Tell Stories. Thank you for sharing this wonderful blog. Report Spam Posted by chic_bebe (chicbebe.com) at 1:10 PM on 07/12/11

  • I say if you art speaks the words of your heart to continue it. Just because someone else's heart speaks the same thing does not mean that others will not want to see your art too! There are lots of works of art that are similar but not the same and that does not stop artist from doing the same kind of art! I know that your art means a lot to you and would probably make you feel like you were going to burst from holding it in. I myself would mourn the loss if you stopped making art. • You know the art you do that feels illustrative to me and the ones that feel familiar to me, those are the ones that seem the most to have stories in them and so words would be great. Just make sure to be you and not to compare yourself to others. I used to love to doodle and then add a few words in the form of a story or poem. My cousin and I did a whole series called tall feet that was 100% silly and 100% fun. This is good to help you express the direction you want to go. I'd put your first name in front of Sweetland just so people don't think your playing off Storyland too much, and I'd only draw cows, monkeys and chickens (okay forget that part). • I say... go for it!!!! You have your own stories, your own pictures, your own way of expressing it all!!!!!! It may be simular, but it's still yours!!! Just put what's in your heart into it, and do it!!!!!! Report Spam Posted by susan_brown at 7:45 PM on 07/12/11

  • I know what it's like carrying one's own personal artistic vision and having no vehicle but paper to put it into. You want others to see it, but then, again, there are days when you can care less if they're ever seen. It can be tiresome. And if you don't sell something, it is frustrating. I think your art is great and fun. Don't worry about having a story to go along with it. But if one comes along after you create it,feel free to go with it. It won't be contrived. Your last name is nice, but if you want to use your maiden name professionally, I think you should go ahead. It might strengthen your identity as an artist. • Never let somebody else's work convince you against creating your own. If anything, let it encourage you to keep going. You have found a connection with another artist and that is something beautiful. Anything you create will always be YOURS. 2 men in 2 different countries "invented" cameras around the same time, but the processes they used were so different and had their own reasons for being used.
