The Owens Valley, located in central California, spans roughly from Olancha to Bridgeport. The largest towns are Independence, Big Pine, Lone Pine, Bishop, Mammoth and Bridgeport. This is a beautiful, semi-arid region surrounded by the Sierra Nevada Mountains on the west and the White and Inyo Mountains on the east. The Owens River runs through the center of the Owens Valley and is the primary source of water for Los Angeles. There is only one good rock shop in the entire Owens Valley and it iss Lone Pine Rock and Gift Shop in Lone Pine. It was closed for awhile but looks like it is open once again. The localities described were all personally visited throughout the years and not just summarized from books. Some localities are not even found in any current literature. The forecast low temperature for that night was eight degrees. Fortunately it was to be dry and clear. We were up well before dawn the next morning and on our way to the Grand Canyon, some seventy-five miles north. We managed to get to the first overlook on the south rim before the sun was up. Others there weren’t so warmly dressed and the cutting wind had brought forth strange body wraps from whatever was available in their cars. Everyone seemed to have a camera and all of us wanted to catch that magic moment. Actually there were many magic moments as each of us shot picture after picture of the morning light spreading across and down into the canyon. Faye and I shifted overlooks several times as the sun rose, jockeying for just the right angle for a composition that wouldn’t look like another calendar picture. It was hard to do and every scene framed seemed, well, oh so familiar. See less

We turned in real early hoping to be rested enough to have a real GOOD first-time-ever sunstone hunting day! We woke up Wednesday to a frozen wasteland! Prepared for anything, we still had to Dig out our long johns, mittens and etc and shiver ourselves around camp. The top of Hart Mountain was fully clouded in and the windshield was iced. I got the ice off with a spatula and I wished I had my doggies fur coat!!! Our drive was going to plunge us right into the Rabbit Hills desert flats so we looked forward to warming up. Going down Hart Mountain to the desert was a scenic steep drop and I was astonished that I could see lakes and more lakes! 10 years ago I’d been down in that country and it was dry as a bone but now I understood “Lake County”. It warmed up quick as expected and we figured out from all my 4 maps just which roads were the quickest. The final sunstone road was another that was 10 miles of 100% washboard! Ugh. Fee Digging:The mine opens May 20th and closes September 30th. Our operating hours are 8 AM to 4:00 PM. The fee is $50 per day. One child, 12 and under is free when accompanied by one paid adult. The Travel Channel aired a film featuring the Bonanza Opal Mine in January and again in March. They were in error when they stated "Anyone can dig in the bank." The Bonanza is a privately owned Corporation which is controlled by the 100 shareholders. Only shareholders are allowed to dig in the bank. The tailings for fee diggers come from this same bank and is very rich in opal. There is a free campground with showers and a soaking pond of natural heated water. The Oregon Sunstone Public Collection Area allows visitors to enjoy collecting these rare and beautiful gems in their natural setting. The boundaries of the collection area are marked by orange plastic posts and corners are marked with large Bureau of Land Management triangles on wooden posts. Sunstone is located in the remote Rabbit Basin and due to its isolated location rock hounds visiting the area should be well prepared. The only facilities available at the site are a vault toilet, picnic tables, and a shade structure. You are welcome to camp anywhere within the Sunstone Collection Area. But believe it or not, now is the perfect time to begin preparing for a successful autumn harvest. Over the next month, we’ll plan our seed order. By the end of February, our seeds will be started indoors. All of this leads to those exciting days at the end of April when we can move our plants to the vegetable garden!
