(09/06/07) The first Dylan hits collection has all the famous stuff from the mid-Sixties: Blowing in the Wing, Mr. Tambourine Man, Like a Rolling Stone, The Times They Are A-Changin' etc. Those songs are indispensable to any rock collection. But I think I like volume two better. This collection has twice as many songs as the first hits album, and the songs are mesmerizingly beautiful and skillfully written. Another reason why I like this collection better than volume one is because the songs on volume one have been played to death on the radio. I love the melodious pop folk sounds of "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue, "My Back Pages," and "I Shall Be Released." I also like the hard rocking "Maggie's Farm," the soft rocking "All Along the Watchtower," the country melody of "If Not For You,' aw heck, I like them all. It should also go without saying that every single Dylan album from the 1960s is absolutely 5 star material, and some of his later albums are vastly unappreciated (Slow Train Coming,...See less

As a result of the film's popularity, MCA released the definitive box set THE COMPLETE BUDDY HOLLY on six LPs the following year. Unfortunately, the collection has gone out of print, and despite rumors to the contrary it has never been released on CD. This leaves BUDDY HOLLY GOLD (a retitling of 1993's THE BUDDY HOLLY COLLECTION) as the most comprehensive collection currently available. The fifty songs here span Holly's entire recording career. The earliest recordings are from either late 1954 or early 1955 when they recorded a few demos in Wichital Falls, Texas as Buddy and Bob (Montgomery). At this time, the duo was still performing country flavored material--especially the Everly Brothers influenced number "Soft Place in My Heart" (written by Montgomery), but the Holly/Mongomery-penned "Down the Line" has a solid rockabilly beat. (09/06/07) Much like Chuck Berry's first album ("After School Session"), Buddy Holly's first full-length is more a document of his early recording sessions (and the hit singles that they spawned) than a concerted effort to make a cohesive album-length statement. Not exactly surprising a full decade before The Beatles conceptualized Sgt. Pepper's. But also like Berry's debut, this collection of song presents an album of snapshots that document the genesis of rock 'n' roll. The album's original dozen tracks plays almost like a greatest hits collection, with signature gems like "Oh Boy!" "Not Fade Away," "Maybe Baby," "That'll be the Day" testifying to rock 'n' roll immortality. Holly's ringing guitar and hiccupping vocals drew from a different sensibility than did Berry's blues-tinged playing, but the backbeat and optimism of the lyrics (even the heartbreak suggested it was great to be a teenager ready to fall in love again) brought them together under the rock 'n' roll banner.
