Leslie Brooks plays the title character, a newspaper columnist who marries for money and makes sure she gets the dough she's due from her marriages as soon as she can. The whole time she's hooking up with rich guys, she's really in love (or whatever dames like this call love) with a guy she works with on the same paper. One of the most interesting things about this film is the possibility that noted B director Edgar Ulmer (Detour, Bluebeard, Strange Illusion) may have written the script for the film under its original title, Single Indemnity. The intent, no doubt, was to play off the huge success of the A noir Double Indemnity, released four years earlier. Gittes, whose heard this rap before, just smiles. "Why is that funny?" asks Cross. "It's what the D.A. used to tell me about Chinatown." If any exchange defines "Chinatown" the movie then this is it. It's a film where the cliched metaphor of the onion is quite apt: the more layers you peel away, the more layers you find. And the less you're likely to understand. It begins life as a simple detective story, but eventually spins out of control into a web of intrigue (another cliched metaphor) that not only includes the murder of water commissioner Hollis Mulwray, but the entirety of 1930's Los Angeles. (09/04/07) Francis Ford Coppola and Roger Corman are two names I would never have thought of putting together, but linked they are in the production of the highly enjoyable thriller Dementia 13. I was quite amazed to discover that Coppola got his start as an assistant to Corman, and this film, Coppola's directorial debut (the first he acknowledges, anyway), was actually filmed on the same set of the contemporary Corman production of The Terror. This really is Coppola's twenty thousand dollar baby, as he wrote as well as directed the film. I for one found it quite good. Although the killer is not that hard to identify, there were enough suspicions cast upon one or two other characters to keep me from putting all of my accusatory eggs in one basket before the climactic ending. There are also some twists and turns along the way that I didn't really see coming, and I was forced to change my whole outlook midway through the drama. I have managed to lay my hands on an American DVD version after struggling with an English-style DVD for the past years. Upon re-viewing, this excellent movie stands up! This is the third of the Dana Andrews/Otto Preminger movies in my ken, the first two being Laura (swoon) and Where the Sidewalk Ends (yawn). This is hands down the best of the three. Eric Stanton (Dana Andrews) rolls into town one night after riding the bus as far as his ticket will take him. He almost immediately encounters Stella (Linda Darnell, and how!) the town sexpot. She works as a waitress and as a golddigger, dating every man in town and a few that just roll her way. But what she wants is to get married and settle down. It was supposed to be an "experimental" film, and that shows in the film's self-conscious style and self-indulgent tone. "Killer's Kiss" is usually categorized as "film noir", and it is actually self-consciously noir, at times to the point of caricature. This is interesting, since many critics have argued that film noir had no real conventions. Hard-core noir probably does have conventions, and "Killer's Kiss" proves that by hanging the entire story on conventions of introverted 1940s crime films. There are voice-over narration, flashbacks, unfortunate coincidences, sleazy underworld characters, a woman who spells trouble for the men around her, general pessimism, and a brooding tough guy leading man. Long renowned for the excellence of their titles, they really have outdone themselves this time `round. Not only do we have the two feature length versions of Hemmingway's story, from 1946 and 1964 respectively, but we have a wonderfully atmospheric audio reading of the original by Stacy Keach, a 1949 radio adaptation, AND Andriie Tarkovsky's 1956 student film version; "The Killers" x 5!!! Of the rest of the extensive "extras," the jewel in the crown is an interview with Clu Gulager, filmed in 2002, in which he tells some great stories about the 1964 production, and Lee Marvin in particular! As the lovers kiss,a class of giggling school girls spots them who are promptly shepherded away by a vigilant elderly female school teacher. (09/05/07) First of all, "Touch of Evil" is one of my top 5 favorite movies, and one of the most important and influential movies ever made. However, it seems to me that importance or influence doesn't mean anything to the Universal Home Video, at least in the case of this movie, because, the DVD treatment is really in one word "Horrible!". Orson Welles' "Touch of Evil", has inspired and influenced so many filmmakers ever since its release, from the French New Wave directors like Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard, to George Lucas and Martin Scorsese and beyond, that it doesn't seem to me to be ridiculous or nitpicking to expect special treatment on the DVD, or at least decent treatment. The only positive thing about this DVD is the first 5 seconds of the opening menu. The picture and sound quality are probably the worst that I have seen yet on a major studio DVD release. The picture is very blurry and it's very difficult to see what's going on because of the darkness, and it's not as a result...See less

(09/04/07) When MGM produced this lavish musical in 1940-41, most of the world was at war and the U.S. was on the verge of joining it. Austerity was already being called for in the U.S.A., and Hollywood was doing its part. The studios at that time were closely allied with the federal government which saw movies as a tool for democracy rather than the way Hollywood is treated by government today. That austerity measure is the primary reason this great musical feast was produced in the less-expensive, always-acceptable (and, at the time, "the norm") black-and-white rather than as a fantastic Technicolor feast. Musicals did not YET rule the lot of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer although they would, soon enough, keep that studio in the black. Nevertheless, this movie is one of the most beautiful black-and-white musicals ever produced.
