Cultural Tour of South India Join us for a four-week tour in south India involving volunteering, visits to cultural sites, and immersion in Indian culture. See the detailed Itinerary below. This tour takes you to some of the most important cities and cultural sites in south India. Participants arrive in Bangalore, then travel to Hampi, Mamallapuram, Pondicherry, Chennai, Mysore, then back to Bangalore -- all in 28 days! You will have the chance to contribute to each of the local communities you visit by volunteering in conservation projects, with school students, orphanage children, and women's groups. One special project will be volunteering in tsunami areas in Mamallapuram and surrounding fishing villages. You will also be able to try your hand at local arts or crafts and try rock climbing if you are feeling a little more adventurous during the tour. The goal is ecologically sustainable agriculture and preservation of the environment. No experience with agriculture is needed, however volunteers with professional or educational background in agricultural sciences would be an added advantage. When you are not in the field, you can also assist in the offices of these NGO’s, to do things like write and edit reports, generate publicity for the projects, and help with filing. In India, as in all cultures, there are women who at some time in their life have experienced physical, sexual or emotional abuse. Through this program, volunteers have the opportunity to help disadvantaged women in India by gving them love, care and support. We work with a number of homes that have been set up to provide food and shelter, a shield from further, and support and caring to help them create better lives for themselves. As a volunteer, you will work with the full-time counselers to help the women with learning English, gaining vocational skills like beautician work and stitching, as well as health education such as HIV/AIDS, child rearing, nurtition, yoga, and sanitation. You can also assist the women who seek redress in the judicial system for the abuse they have suffered. See less

In Delhi there are an estimated 175,000 street children, with 7-10 % being runaways. There are more than 2,500 children who live in and around New Delhi Railway Station alone. They can be seen scavenging the rubbish heap for a meal , sleeping between the tracks, often beaten and sexually abused and falling prey to drug dealers, pimps and child traffickers. There is so much missing from their lives – food, security, health, love & education and a place to play sleep and dream. Volunteers can work at one of our local partner organizations which serve as day care centers for these street children. Volunteers can assist in providing love, care, basic literacy, sports and recreration, and most importantly spend time and shower affection on them. It can make a world of difference to their lives. We have standing requests from local facilities for Internists, Urologists, Surgeons, Oncologists, Opthamologists, Nurses, Dentists, and EMT's. You will play a critical role in the villages and towns where you'll serve. Particularly in rural areas, where much of the local people live, there is a desperate, chronic shortage of medical personnel and supplies. Volunteers can teach in primary schools, in both government and private institutions. The most frequently requested subject is English, but you can also teach math, science, music, geography, art, dance, etc. The children range in age from 5 to 13 years of age. The teaching curriculum for each major subject is based on the students' standard book. Volunteers are also encouraged to create their own lesson plans. Depending on the subject, volunteers can bring along teaching materials such as picture books, instruments, flash cards, art supplies, and songs. Each institution has its own permanent staff member who assists volunteers with their teaching and in communicating with the children and colleagues. Classes are generally in session six days a week, with four to six class periods each day and a break for lunch. Volunteers do NOT have to be native English speakers.We prefer that volunteers teach for at least one month, although exceptions can be made in special circumstances. See less

Students are middle-class, mostly from Yantai, and they live at the schools from Monday-Friday then go home on weekends. Each school has an English-teaching department. The average class size is about 40 and classes are typically 40 minutes long. The students who are 15-16 speak very good English. There are normally several volunteers at one school.
