But we’ll let you in on a little secret: things are often cheaper in Dubai’s shopping centres and souqs (markets). Cell phones, iPods, diamonds and pearls, designer watches, perfume and cosmetics all figure heavily in Dubai Duty Free’s roughly $600 million in sales, but really you’re better off buying most of these in town before you get to the airport. (But definitely buy your French perfume in Dubai – it’s cheaper than it is in France!) We’ve seen people virtually melt down when they see that the TAG Heuer watch they’re after was cheaper at Bur Juman shopping centre back in the city. Poetic, lightweight and immaculately white, Icarus reminds us of the human aspiration to flight: a link between us and the celestial light. Tord Boontje – another über talended designer from the Netherlands says about his design: "Through experimentation with cutting paper to create a three dimensional form for a light, we discovered a structure with overlapping feather shapes that resembled a swan's wing. We made the form a-symmetrical to emphasise this and to make it very dynamic. As the light appears as a wing circling a light, the name Icarus seemed an appropriate reference." We completely agree, but add some important details: It comes packed flat, you shouldn't use more than a 60 watt bulb which is not included, the material used is Mylar and it is approximately 16.5" x 31.25" x 16.5" (42 x 79 x 42 cm) in size. It was officially presented for the first time at the Tendence Design Fair in Frankfurt earlier this year. Made out of fragile parchment, each set contains 3 different shades with cute and whimsical designs that are printed in a faint white. All you need to do is take them out of the package, roll them up, drop a candle into a wine glass and add the lampshade. That's it. Its basically exactly what the name says: A silicone sucker. Need more info? OK. Think of it this way, a hanger that you can put up on the wall, and if you don't want it any more, take it off and stick it somewhere else. It is a soft silicone contraption and all you do is stick it on the wall and press the air out. The resulting vacuum holds the 'Sucker' to the wall - don't need it any more? Lift up an edge, have the air flow back inside and voilà - no more 'sucker on the wall'. Smart eh? We love it in the kitchen and in the bathroom, but also to add additional hangers in a closet. Straight out of the new Elfcraft studio comes this fabulous bracelet just in time for the holidays. We were in Hamburg a couple days ago and simply had to pop our head into our favorite silversmiths new studio and get the personal tour. The new space is fab and has a great showroom where all the pieces are on display, which is a huge step up from the previous tiny shop. Within minutes we found ourselves browsing and picked up this great bracelet which is a perfect addition to the ones we already have. This one is pitch black and the sterling silver closures sport a Fleur-De-Lis on each side which gives it a real nice touch. The woven bracelet is made of soft, pitch black leather, with a slight blue-ish tone, somewhat reminiscent of night sky. The closure is Sterling Silver, and has a very simple mechanism to close it. We only picked up one length this time (8"/20 cm) but it can easily be adjusted by heating a closure, pulling out the bracelet, shortening it to the desired length and... See less
