But we’ll let you in on a little secret: things are often cheaper in Dubai’s shopping centres and souqs (markets). Cell phones, iPods, diamonds and pearls, designer watches, perfume and cosmetics all figure heavily in Dubai Duty Free’s roughly $600 million in sales, but really you’re better off buying most of these in town before you get to the airport. (But definitely buy your French perfume in Dubai – it’s cheaper than it is in France!) We’ve seen people virtually melt down when they see that the TAG Heuer watch they’re after was cheaper at Bur Juman shopping centre back in the city. The thing is that Dubai doesn’t have any tax on many of these items anyway, so you’re better off shopping around before you get to the airport. Tord Boontje – another über talended designer from the Netherlands says about his design: "Through experimentation with cutting paper to create a three dimensional form for a light, we discovered a structure with overlapping feather shapes that resembled a swan's wing. We made the form a-symmetrical to emphasise this and to make it very dynamic. As the light appears as a wing circling a light, the name Icarus seemed an appropriate reference." We completely agree, but add some important details: It comes packed flat, you shouldn't use more than a 60 watt bulb which is not included, the material used is Mylar and it is approximately 16.5" x 31.25" x 16.5" (42 x 79 x 42 cm) in size.See less

Well if you are a parent, then you know that the little one loves to be rocked around, and if it's in a blanket, the joy doesn't seem to stop. What does stop though, is the stamina of the parents who are holding the edges of the blanket, making sure little Tommy won't take off. The re-cover blanket takes the work out off the equasion because the sturdy ropes are formidable handles that allow you to hold the blanket safely and securely with little Tommy getting a kick out of the action. No, Gorgeous Helen is not the latest interior decorator from Sweden, but the newest product by Anke and Katrin from the designers cooperative Dekoop in Hamburg. It was officially presented for the first time at the Tendence Design Fair in Frankfurt earlier this year. Made out of fragile parchment, each set contains 3 different shades with cute and whimsical designs that are printed in a faint white. All you need to do is take them out of the package, roll them up, drop a candle into a wine glass and add the lampshade. That's it. (11/29/08) The creative guys over at Droog Design give all new meaning to the word sucker. This is one of the smartest contraptions for the home and we are amazed how few have actually heard of it. Its basically exactly what the name says: A silicone sucker. Need more info? OK. Think of it this way, a hanger that you can put up on the wall, and if you don't want it any more, take it off and stick it somewhere else. It is a soft silicone contraption and all you do is stick it on the wall and press the air out. The resulting vacuum holds the 'Sucker' to the wall - don't need it any more? Lift up an edge, have the air flow back inside and voilà - no more 'sucker on the wall'. Smart eh? We love it in the kitchen and in the bathroom, but also to add additional hangers in a closet. It's a lamp made out of oak wood frames and the frames provide both the frame of the lamp as well as the lampshade. At 3.9"x3.9"x10.6" (or 10 x 10 x 27 cm if you feel more at home with the metric system) it is a perfect size for any small surface that needs enhancing. The wooden frames are attached alongside one axis, allowing you to play with them and create different overlapping spaces, which in turn allow the light to stream out. Whether you are into clean and crisp geometric shapes or prefer the more chaotic approach, anything is pretty much possible with this unique lamp. A pinch of salt here, a sprinkling of pepper there, some cayenne in the back and some dried thyme on the fish. So there you are opening and closing your little containers as needed, but imagine all you had to do was to squeeze them and be ready to pour with an opening so perfect, you can precisely gauge how much you'll be actually pouring out. Sounds great but probably too good to be true? Well, think again, because HolaOla No1 (don't ask us what those guys have going on with names) is exactly that. It's the third product Kyouei Design from Japan are launching for this years ICFF and it is definitely the highlight in our humble opinion... (11/29/08) Straight out of the new Elfcraft studio comes this fabulous bracelet just in time for the holidays. We were in Hamburg a couple days ago and simply had to pop our head into our favorite silversmiths new studio and get the personal tour. The new space is fab and has a great showroom where all the pieces are on display, which is a huge step up from the previous tiny shop. Within minutes we found ourselves browsing and picked up this great bracelet which is a perfect addition to the ones we already have. This one is pitch black and the sterling silver closures sport a Fleur-De-Lis on each side which gives it a real nice touch. The woven bracelet is made of soft, pitch black leather, with a slight blue-ish tone, somewhat reminiscent of night sky. The closure is Sterling Silver, and has a very simple mechanism to close it. We only picked up one length this time (8"/20 cm) but it can easily be adjusted by heating a closure, pulling out the bracelet, shortening it to the desired length and...See less

(11/29/08) We met Sandra Bautista a couple month back alongside ICFF and were immediately taken by her beautiful work. Now whilst we think that Marie's Closet will be the perfect home for her, we couldn't resist and have her wonderful lace bracelets here. In fact, we liked her work so much that you'll be seeing more of her work very soon. Fragile bracelets, hand made out of lace, in 4 different colors (only the black comes in a different width as well) they are trimmed with a super thin leather strip that ends in a metal bracelet and a glass bead allowing the width of the bracelet to be adjusted individually... The ideal product for those who like to whizzz around in the kitchen, whipping up multi course feasts, know that a table spoon of oil here and a bit of soy there is the standard procedure. One is constantly in need of some liquid and that means open bottle, close bottle, open bottle, close bottle and anybody who has ever spilled a bottle of Thai fish sauce know of the importance of a properly closed bottle.
