So-called "ED-TV" sets, a stopgap measure to get a slightly better TV picture at a much lower price, are no longer blocking your view of real HDTVs. Good 32-inch flat-panel LCD HDTVs are available for under $1000 in consumer stores. It may be time to buy yourself and your family a high-definition TV. You might not even know what LCD and DLP are before asking the obvious question "which one is better?" The answer is simple. Sort of. LCD and DLP each have unique advantages over the other. Neither one is perfect. So it is important to understand what each one gives you. Then you can make a good decision about which will be better for you. By the way, there is a third significant light engine technology called LCOS (liquid crystal on silicon). It is being developed by several vendors, most notably JVC, Sony, and Hitachi. Several outstanding home theater projectors have been manufactured with this technology. However the discussion of LCOS technology is beyond the scope of this article. See less

These technologies have been evolving rapidly over the years. The differences between them have narrowed. When it comes to contrast, LCD still lags behind DLP by a considerable margin. Recently LCD has closed the gap with DLP on this feature. A projector with a contrast rating of 2000:1 or greater is capable of producing excellent images and shadow detail. The performance differences in LCD versus DLP are not as significant as they used to be. LCD can usually deliver a slightly sharper image than DLP and LCD color is rich and natural. Additionally one huge question remains with DLP sets - the “rainbow effect”. No, there are a few differances. Most notably the case design of the 5656, is similar to the last generation style hl-xxx63. The contrast ratio is Up to 2500:1 on the 5667, and 2000:1 on the 5656. The one at Costco also includes the stand, which sells for $499 is purchased seperately. I purchased the 5667 a few weeks ago at Brandsmart for $2498, and Costco got the 5656 in the following week for $2399. Tiger direct is selling the 5667 for $2299. I prefer the (floating) case design of the 5667. The HD is OUTSTANDING! Either way, you will not be dissapointed. These are fantastic sets. And the bulbs are $199. on the cheaper end of DLP bulbs.
