When I was in high school, a push for environmental awareness was sparked by concern over the ozone layer. The US government managed to ban CFCs during this time and recycling programs sprouted up in towns all over the country. And then, well, some other crisis caught the media’s attention and it seems like over the last 15 years, the nation took the proverbial “one step back” after its “two steps forward.” As attention turns once more en masse to the protection of the environment, it’s important to remember that arguably the most important of the “3 Rs” is not “recycle,” but “reduce.” When we keep resources out of the consumption cycle all together, we don’t have to worry about reusing or recycling them. It’s with that in mind that I created this mesh tote, suitable for getting groceries home from the store and reducing the need to use store-provided bags. Do you have a million of these shopping bags lying around? (And I DO mean a million because no matter how many you squirrel away for this project, you will still have to sneak over to your neighbor's and steal some more.) (All images are clickable to enlarge for a better view). 1). First you will need to prepare the bags into a crochet-able ball of "yarn". Lay bag flat. Smooth out wrinkles. 2). Cut off both the bottom and the top like in photo. 3). Next fold bag in half. In half. In half. Always from side to side. Never top to bottom! 4). Cut into 1 1/2 inch segments. This creates these plastic ring strips. You will be joining these strips to create your ball of plastic "yarn". Here's how..... overlap one ring atop another. Draw other end (right) of top ring underneath the ring below and through the middle. Tighten gently without breaking. Tadaaaa! Coke Bottle Vase There is no product that looks sexier than the coke bottle. The new Blak Coke bottle is small and works perfect as a vase. So I decided to peel off the shrink-wrap, and crochet around the bottle to create a nice, sexy-looking vase. Here's what you start with. These are pictures afterwards. You can put some nice, tall flowers in it. Or crochet afghan hooks. Or knitting needles. It is the same height as a cone of Lily's Sugar'n Cream yarn. Here's the bottom where you begin. The vase is done in double crochet stitch with number 10 crochet thread in your choice of colors. Obviously you need a small Coke bottle I used a steel crochet hook number 4 (in U.S. size) Row 1 ch 6 and slip stitch into the first ch to create a ring. Row 2 ch3, dc 13 into the ring making a total of 14 (14) Row 3 ch5, *dc in next ch, ch2, skip one ch*, repeat from * 6 times, slip stitch into 3ch in the beginning ch. I just finished my first Granny Square Motif Bag made completely out of recycled plastic bags. It's about 9 inches square with a 17 inch strap handle. I found that it was easier on my hands so for anyone out there that has had problems crocheting with the plastic bag yarn, you might want to try this pattern. I made this a small purse bag but you could easily add more rounds to make it a tote sized bag. Enjoy! See less
