Our daughter Ellen has been going places in the bike trailer since before she was 2 months old. We have a Burley Solo trailer that we strap a car safety seat into, and then Ellen goes into the car safety seat. When she was 5 months old, we did a little cycle tour with her. I was looking for a nice place to go to that wasn't too far from Cambridge and hit upon Bury St. Edmonds, which is roughly 25 miles due east of Cambridge. I had heard it was a pretty town, with some interesting history (there was a very important abbey there in medieval times) and a big market in the center of town on Saturdays. We decided to do it the weekend of Friday August 1st through Sunday August 3rd: we would ride out on the Friday, spend Saturday exploring the town, and ride back Sunday. We would take the tandem; that way we would both work at pulling Ellen. See less

Bury St Edmunds is a town in the county of Suffolk, England. It is the main town in the borough of St Edmundsbury and is probably most famous for the ruined abbey which stands near the town centre. The abbey is a shrine to Saint Edmund, the Saxon King of the East Angles, who was killed by the Danes in 869 AD. The town initially grew around the abbey, a site of pilgrimage, and developed into a flourishing clothmaking town by the 14th century. The abbey was largely destroyed during the 16th century with the dissolution of the monasteries but Bury remained a prosperous town throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. As would be expected of a town in such a rural area, Bury fell into relative decline with the onset of the industrial revolution and accordingly remains an attractive market town. Next to the abbey is the cathedral, created only relatively recently in 1913. It was extended with a new eastern end in the 1960s, and, as of 2004, a new cathedral tower is still under construction.... See less

Bury St. Edmunds takes its name from Edmund, the last king of East Anglia, who was slain by the Vikings about 870 A.D. Edmund was buried here in the early 10th century and his tomb became the site of mass pilgrimages. St. Mary's, the church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is one of the largest parish churches in England, and the second to stand on this site. The church and its tower were built during the time of Abbot Anselm, 1120 - 1148, and dedicated by Bishop John of Rochester, 1137 - 1142. FACT: Bury St Edmunds is where they buried St Edmund. Well, most of him. We went on a trip to Bury, and a lovely day was had by all. No really. matt and zoj had taken the week off, and had used it up mostly playing computer games and doing small amounts of tidying, but today was their Big Afternoon Out. It was a bit cloudy to start with, but that all decided not to bother by the time we reached the station, so we all piled on to Queen Boadicea train (Anglia Railways would seem to be naming their trains after famous Anglians. marketing, eh?) and crawled off past Matt's old house in Cherry Hinton. Stopped in Dullingham. Nobody moved. zoj tried to spot Dullingham from the station; thought she had, but it turned out to be a farm. After that, Bury St Edmunds seemed like Chicago; I took a picture of the map at the station so we could consult it when lost in the metropolis. Crafty, oh yes. Unfortunately we'd only got as far as the Nutshell--the smallest pub in England--when the batteries ran... See less

In 1748, the new Incorporation paid Thomas Woodroffe the sum of £420 for a house on College Street, formerly part of Jesus College, and converted it into a workhouse. A parliamentary report of 1777 recorded that the Bury St Edmunds workhouse could acommodate 250 inmates. See less

Two mighty gates and a few fragments are all that survive of the Abbey, once one of the most powerful monasteries in England. Today's Abbey Gardens offer a peaceful refuge. The largely sixteenth century cathedral, not yet completed, is on an adjacent site. The new Manor House Museum, with its history of timekeeping, shouldn't be missed. Nearby are Ickworth Rotunda and the West Stow Anglo-Saxon village. See less

Officially, it is St Edmundsbury. Its popular name is Bury St Edmunds, but Suffolkers call it Bury. Of Suffolk's towns, Bury is third in size. But it can make a reasonably convincing claim to be the most significant. Ipswich and Lowestoft are away on the east coast, whereas Bury is central; Bury was, until 1974, the county town of West Suffolk. And, more than a thousand years ago, it may well have been the capital of all East Anglia. This, and then the martyrdom of the Saxon King Edmund by Viking invaders; his body was brought here to lie in state, and be buried. A great abbey grew up around the shrine, which became the third most popular site of pilgrimage in the country after Canterbury and Walsingham. See less
