No wonder my fabric has been puckering and getting crammed into the needle plate, i had been using my zig-zag satin foot when i should have been using my regular foot (ya there is a difference!) As an experienced amateur seamstress I was looking for a book that would guide me through both designing and sewing a wedding dress for my 6'3" daughter. This book was exactly what I needed to accomplish my goal. Step by step I was able to complete each part of the gown. The final product was stunning and much of the beauty of the gown was because of the construction techniques on the inside that no one would know about eg. lining the fabric (bodice only) with white baby flannelette and treating it as one piece. The beautiful, smooth, princess seams were perfect. In reading the details and applying them to my situation I was able to create a lovely gown. With a good sewing background, a passion for perfection, love for my daughter and her dream dress AND this wonderful book it was everything I had hoped for and would highly recommend it. It certainly is not for a novice, but once someone has mastered the basics, and is desiring to make an expensive-looking wardrobe, this would be a very good basic resource. The book seems to be quite a labor of love by the author, who clearly wants to pass on her wealth of experience. It is dense with practical material and has an incredible number of detailed photographs that go with the instructions. How to do all the scary stuff. This is not the "Home Ec Way" of sewing, but techniques worked out by a lady who earned her living making quality clothing. It is not as general as the title suggested to me; it's an exact manual on creating pants, shirts, vests, and jackets in a precise and practical way. Starting with a much better fit. For sewing pants, you start with a favorite pair that you own, and she has a detailed technique for copying their fit safely and accurately, and working from there. He went step by step and assumed you didn't know anything about sewing pockets. This author uses the same common sense layman language throughout the whole book. The pictures are black and white, but helpful. He makes you feel as if he was passing down all his tailoring secrets from generations before along to you. This book is not about speed tailoring with fusible interfacings. He goes into great detail to show you the exact hand stitches to look like a pro did it. I like the way he warns people of the common mistakes and how to avoid them. I am an avid sewer, but I have never made a suit. If you are looking for a style book, this is one of the very few available outside the tailoring trade. However, if you are not looking for page after page of diagrams whose accompanying text reads "A from B inseam less 2"; C from D 5 3/4"; Connect A and C with hip curve ruler; etc", then you will not be happy with this book. I would recommend Jane Rhinehart's "How to Make Men's Clothes" (sadly three decades out of print, but still available used) for instructions on how to interpret a tailor's style book, along with LOTS of instruction on how to construct a traditionally structured men's suit coat. The book is written in a clear and straight-to-the point manner; no confusing terms if you are, as I had mentioned, already familiar with fashion design. The diagrams are in black in white and are clearly labeled. The steps are laid out clearly and the instructions are very to-the-point. Another great feature about this book is that in it had black and white photos of the tools needed to make patterns, a must for those beginners who have no idea what a french curve looks like. I really enjoyed reading what the Economides shared about living a "thrifty" life. This is full of basic advice for living a frugal life, but even those who have been practicing thrifty living can learn a few things. I especially enjoyed their section on how to save on groceries (although I haven't yet tried to do all my shopping for the month in one day) and their chapter on children's allowances. For those who are trying to get out of debt, I'd recommend starting with the chapter on budgeting. The book is very well-written and fun to read. If you're inspired and want to read more, I'd recommend the Tightwad Gazette by Amy Dacyczyn and Your Money or Your Life: Transforming Your Relationship with Money and Achieving Financial Independence. by Joe Dominguez Comment | Was this review helpful to you? This is an excellent book on how to assemble a corset. It's full of good illustrations, helpful advice, and useful tips. It doesn't teach you how to design a corset from scratch, nor does it include a pattern. Comment | Was this review helpful to... See more
