(11/18/09) Amazon.com Shinichiro Watanabe's film noir-ish sci-fi adventure Cowboy Bebop set a new standard for cool in anime in 1998, and Samurai Champloo, an edgy mix of Edo-era martial arts and hip-hop irreverence, is a worthy follow-up. A string of coincidences brings together three misfits in a two-bit tea house: Mugen, a rebellious vagabond; Jin, a taciturn ronin; and Fuu, a nutty waitress. The sardonic Mugen lacks the polish that distinguishes a classic martial artist--he uses break dance spins and flips against his foes. Jin moves with a polish that approaches iciness: When he unsheathes his sword, he becomes a lethal work of art in motion. Fuu forces Jin and Mugen to help her find a mysterious samurai "who smells of sun flowers." As the ill-assorted trio wanders towards Nagasaki, Watanabe treats the audiences to a string of outrageous, anachronistic adventures. In Episode 18, Mugen belatedly learns to read at a smackdown elementary school, while Jin tries to settle the rivalry between the...See less

(11/13/09) These pipes are typical of those commonly used in colonial times. Pipes were made available to inn and tavern patrons who would smoke a bowl and break off some of the end for next smoker, hence the original length of the pipe. These pipes are around 16" long and are individually boxed. We no longer offer the wooden holder.See less

(12/18/10) The English duffle coat originated in the late 19th century, but it was during WW I that the mens hooded coat became popular—distributed to the Royal British Navy to protect sailors from bone-chilling winters at sea. True to the original style, ours has two large patch pockets in front and one interior patch pocket. Liner is of a tartan pattern—charcoal/red/camel. Traditionally, button toggles were made of horn. Ours are fuax horn, with genuine leather loops. Removable button chin flap and oversized hood. Mens hooded duffle coat in camel. Wool/polyester/polymide/acrylic. Dry clean only. UK. Sizes: M(38-40), L(42-44), XL(46-48), XXL(50-52).See less

(11/05/09) "We are healthy only to the extent that our ideas are humane." So reads the tombstone of downtrodden writer Kilgore Trout, but we have no doubt who's really talking: his alter ego Kurt Vonnegut. Health versus sickness, humanity versus inhumanity--both sets of ideas bounce through this challenging and funny book. As with the rest of Vonnegut's pure fantasy, it lacks the shimmering, fact-fueled rage that illuminates Slaughterhouse-Five. At the same time, that makes this book perhaps more enjoyable to read. Breakfast of Champions is a slippery, lucid, bleakly humorous jaunt through (sick? inhumane?) America circa 1973, with Vonnegut acting as our Virgil-like companion. The book follows its main character, auto-dealing solid-citizen Dwayne Hoover, down into madness, a condition brought on by the work of the aforementioned Kilgore Trout. As Dwayne cracks, then crumbles, Breakfast of Champions coolly shows the effects his dementia has on the web of characters surrounding him. It's not much...See less
