Like everyone, I get a TON of junk mail. And despite my calls to company's telling them I want off their catalog mailing lists, I still get a lot of mail that goes straight into the recycling bin - incentive checks from credit cards, sale fliers, you know you get them too. Well in celebration of Earth Day, here's a great way to re-use a lot of that un-wanted mail to make new paper! What you'll need: -Bucket/container -old magazines, letters, junk mail (no newspaper, the consistency will be just terrible, try to keep it to letters and things printed on white paper for the best results) -blender or food processor -screen, deckle and mold, or i've even done it with a silkscreen, though the weight of the paper on a silk screen over time will warp it, and you won't be able to use to that way again -iron (maybe?) -bathtub or large container, large enough for your screen and some space to get the water to mix around Just take your stack of paper and either shred it or rip it up into small... The lovely 2.5" round focal piece of 3 sisters and a rabbit was made by CMK Sculptures who also has a shop at Etsy. The rectangular mirror measures approx. 6.5" W x 9.75" H. There are ceramic roses on the top of the frame, and faux pearls in beneath the roses. The tiles are pink embossed plate tesserae with fruit and leaves, and green embossed plate tesserae with leaf and checks patterns. There is also a round green embossed focal piece from the plate center. The wooden frame was painted a light "basil green" and varnished with a satin craft acrylic varnish. The sanded, polymerized grout is light green, similar to the paint. The back of the mirror is signed by me, and the mirror/shelf is ready to hang with its wire hanger. Wash and press your new fabric. Lay pattern paper over ironing board so that it covers it completely. Use tape to hold it in place. Trace the outline of the board. Cut out your custom template. Place the paper template on fabric; pin in place. Mark a 2.5 inch border on the fabric around the template with a ruler. Cut the fabric along this border using the pinking shears. Set aside. Place the paper template on the batting and pin in place, just as you did with the fabric. If you use the mid-loft batting, you may want to fold the batting and cut two layers out at once. Cut around the edge of the template, then lay it on the ironing board and trim any excess batting. The batting should sit neatly on top of the board without drooping over the edges. Layer the fabric right-side up on the batting. Baste in place, making sure to capture all of the batting. It may be helpful to mark a simple pattern on the fabric before you quilt it. To coincide with the wallpaper story in our July/August issue, I thought I would share my method for making wallpaper lanterns. If you try any of those projects, this would be a perfect use for some of the leftover supplies. Disclaimer: I am not guaranteeing that these are safe. I only use them at parties, while I'm awake. Step 1: Start with a generously sized piece of wallpaper, in the neighborhood of 32" (in this case, the width of the wallpaper) by 44", and make accordion folds about 2" deep until the whole piece is folded. Hole-punch each accordion fold on both sides, as shown here. Step 2: Flip the paper over, and make a fold in the opposite direction of the accordion folds, as shown here (this will form the wide middle part on the finished lantern -- let's call it the "belly fold"). I placed my fold about 1/3 of the way down the paper. Step 3: Unfold, and bring the two sides of the paper together (parallel to the accordion folds). If you've chosen to use a mint tin or other ferromagnetic box, your life will be easy: Just drop your magnet(s) in the box, shut the lid, and stick it to the fridge. Otherwise, welcome to the trickiest part of the project: Opening your boxes without making it look like they've been opened. If you've got large boxes, like the cream cheese box shown here, start with those. Most cardboard boxes used for packaging are assembled with glue. Find a flap that's held down by glue. Using a sharp knife, carefully cut through the glue that holds one of the flaps down. Be sure to not bend the flaps as you open the box this way. | Remove the contents of the box, drop in a magnet, and glue it in place. A hot glue gun is great for this. Drizzle in a little hot glue, and drop the magnet in on top of the bead of hot glue. Quickly place the box on a horizontal ferromagnetic surface (like the top of the fridge) so that the magnet is pulled down, flat against the side of the box and is then held in place... See less
