(06/18/07) For years, weve heard ovarian cancer referred to as a silent killer because the often-vague symptoms frequently go unrecognized as serious until the disease has reached stage III or stage IV. While the cure rate for early ovarian cancer is high at about 90 percent, when ovarian cancer advances to stage III or IV the cure rate is low. Fortunately, the results of a study reported in JAMA, may offer some direction to physicians and women about recognizing important symptoms that suggest performing diagnostic testing for ovarian cancer earlier and more often could mean more women surviving the disease. The high mortality rate associated with ovarian cancer is attributed to the failure of the medical community to provide adequate screening tools to detect early stage, as well as the lack of early clinical symptoms.
