The Great Crinolinomania Period (1846-1865). Undergarments variously made of taffeta, organdy, starched cotton, lace, and horsehair add rustling poofiness to skirts. Women quickly discover that nothing makes them feel more fetching and flirtatious. Men, consequently, find that nothing makes women more attractive. All good things can be carried to extremes, of course, and this one was. Skirts expanded up to 6 feet in diameter. Incautious belles got stuck in doorways, they burst into flames when their hems strayed into the hearthÂ…but does that mean we should throw out the crinoline baby with the bathwater? Not a bit. Our recent experiments here in Lexington have found that even a small amount of crinoline can produce significant benefits with absolutely no risk. This dress is the result.
