(01/05/07) I hate to admit this but the angry Constant Reader that King references in the last pages of his book, the one who doesn't like what he finds at the end of the quest and not to bother him with it...well, i guess that would be me. I almost stopped reading when King said to. I really, truly almost stopped. It would have left me with insatiable curiousity though, and I think I'd have been curious how it all turned out till' my dying day. So with no more willpower than a wino guarding a liquor store, I trudged forth into the final pages of the book. And having finished it I will gladly share my thoughts with the whole shebang. Here's that numbered list everyone hates, along with footnotes: 1. Flagg: Randall Flagg. Anyone who's read "The Stand" understands what a mean, nasty villain this guy is. To be frank I never got the idea that Flagg was entirely human. Sure, he *looks* human, but can change into a crow, can seemingly teleport, has a high innate knowledge of his surroundings. Tom Moon...See less

(01/05/07) Though that doesn't say much, this series has been quite incredible thus far. There are spoilers to the series within this review, so read ahead only if you've read the previous books. As the title indicates, the bulk of the plot within this novel revolves around Susannah, along with Mia and her chap. That isn't to say they get the most written about them, but nearly everything that happens is regarding the two. It is quite a change from The Wolves, however. The Wolves covered a great deal of time and material, here the events take place within the same day. You also get little party interaction, as the characters are all paired off. In the end you get the feeling not much has happened, not even the addition of more back story. The western themes disappear as the characters are brought into the world of the reader. Stephen King himself appears, in a twist I'm still uncertain of. The book has a drastically different feel for this, though, as it no longer feels like a world you're...See less

(01/05/07) First, if you are a true fan of the King and this series, don't read the other reviews-- they are plot spoilers written by people who like to blast popular storytellers for not delivering the second coming of Jesus Christ (The Man Jesus, too) everytime they publish a book or screen a film. A mediocre Stephen King story is still 1000 times the story of what passes for a bestseller these days. And 'Wolves' is no mediocre King tale. It's... well, it's not Wizard and Glass (my favorite in the series, for the romance, the backstory, and the raw emotional ride of the build up and payoff), but it's not like any of the others, either. It is its own, and that is as it should be. After finishing Wolves of the Calla, I struggled to form a definite opinion and I will offer none here. Except to say that what I have always loved about the King's books are the combinations of horror, humanity, and humor; the utter surprise of direction each journey takes, especially in this series; and the comfort of...See less

(01/05/07) Amazon.com The long-awaited, eagerly anticipated, arguably over-hyped Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has arrived, and the question on the minds of kids, adults, fans, and skeptics alike is, "Is it worth the hype?" The answer, luckily, is simple: yep. A magnificent spectacle more than worth the price of admission, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will blow you away. However, given that so much has gone into protecting the secrets of the book (including armored trucks and injunctions), don't expect any spoilers in this review. It's much more fun not knowing what's coming--and in the case of Rowling's delicious sixth book, you don't want to know. Just sit tight, despite the earth-shattering revelations that will have your head in your hands as you hope the words will rearrange themselves into a different story. But take one warning to heart: do not open Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince until you have first found a secluded spot, safe from curious eyes, where you can...See less

(01/04/07) Gary Larson calls The Complete Far Side, the massive two-volume collection of his Far Side cartoons, an "18-pound hernia giver." Sure to give any coffee table a solid workout, the handsome and heavy 1,272-page "legacy book" is a must for fervent fans; over 4,300 single-panel comics with more than half in color and 1,100 that have not appeared in any book form before (the popular--and far less weighty--paperback collections). Set in rough chronological order, the comics share pages with occasional letters from fans, detractors, editors, folks made famous by a particular cartoon, and those begging for explanations. Though few explanations are provided (Larson personally supplies merely one, plus a single apology), this collection helps answer the inevitable "how do you think up these things" conundrum. Before each year's cartoons, Larson provides insight with essays about his childhood, various travels, occupational hazards, and his official rules for dealing with bedtime monsters...See less

(01/04/07) For years, animation buffs have waited impatiently for the Warner Bros. cartoons to appear on DVD. The Warner shorts never commanded the budgets and prestige of the Disney and MGM films, and won fewer Oscars than they deserved. But decades after the best ones were created, they remain the quintessential Hollywood cartoons: brash, fast-paced, aggressively funny and uniquely American. Virtually everyone in the U.S. under the age of 60 grew up on these films, in theaters and on TV. The 56 cartoons in the set (out of a studio output of over 1,000) were transferred from good prints--which means the viewer can see dust, scratches, and occasional mistakes by the cel painters. The films are all presented uncut, in defiance of the killjoys who have insisted on censoring alleged "violence" in the versions shown on television. Warner Bros. is obviously testing consumer response with this set. Although the erratic selection includes many classics, purists will argue (correctly) that it...See less

(01/04/07) As his fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry approaches, 15-year-old Harry Potter is in full-blown adolescence, complete with regular outbursts of rage, a nearly debilitating crush, and the blooming of a powerful sense of rebellion. It's been yet another infuriating and boring summer with the despicable Dursleys, this time with minimal contact from our hero's non-Muggle friends from school. Harry is feeling especially edgy at the lack of news from the magic world, wondering when the freshly revived evil Lord Voldemort will strike. Returning to Hogwarts will be a relief... or will it? The fifth book in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series follows the darkest year yet for our young wizard, who finds himself knocked down a peg or three after the events of last year. Somehow, over the summer, gossip (usually traced back to the magic world's newspaper, the Daily Prophet) has turned Harry's tragic and heroic encounter with Voldemort at the Triwizard Tournament into an...See less

(01/04/07) Normally, Nintendo contract players such as Mario, Pikachu, Link, Donkey Kong, Bowser, and Kirby are generally happy and well-mannered, but in Super Smash Bros. Melee, the pleasantries get thrown out and the gloves (except for Mario's) come off. This update of the N64 favorite features these and other video game icons in furious, yet utterly absurd fisticuffs that usually make for a smashing good time. Just make sure you have at least one human opponent to pound on. Starting off with 14 characters (an additional 11 are waiting to be unlocked), the game has a pretty standard premise--let Nintendo's stars beat on each other until the timer runs out. However, a lot of emphasis is put on knocking opponents off ledges while avoiding the same fate. In typical Nintendo manner, there are quite a few power-ups to assist you in the melee. The actual combat isn't as intricate as in other fighting games; however, the ultra-cartoony layout of the many, many arenas sometimes adds a...See less

(01/04/07) Sega's mascot made his 3-D debut on the Dreamcast, but with the demise of that system the zippy blue hedgehog is popping up everywhere--including on the GameCube. Unfortunately, his first next-gen appearance, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, is marred by the same 3-D camera problems that plagued the Dreamcast version, and the multiplayer "battle" component isn't all that it's cracked up to be. Right out of the gate, players have the option of choosing Hero (Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles) or Dark (Dr. Eggman, Shadow, and Rouge) quests, which are completely different. Sonic and his dark counterpart Shadow traverse levels at warp speed colleting coins and power-ups while fighting enemies in the game's most exhilarating moments. Unfortunately, the other characters are nowhere near as fun to play. Dr. Eggman and Tails fight through levels that require little more than constant button-mashing to shoot an endless procession of enemies, and Knuckles and Rouge participate in seemingly...See less

(01/04/07) True Crime: Streets of L.A. is a Grand-Theft-Auto-esque action/driving/shooter that allows you to take control of Nick Kang, a cop out to solve a strange rash of crimes and solve his father's mysterious murder. The game treats itself like a movie, with frequent dialogue and cinematics, a soundtrack filled with some of rap's heavy hitters, and some surprising voiceover talent, like Christopher Walken and Snoop Dogg. The missions given to you tend to involve shooting up or beating up (there is a big distinction between gun fighting and kung fu) a room full of bad guys, or simply have you racing against the clock in your car. In between, you can roam around and solve simple street crimes (mugging, car jackings, etc), or earn upgrades for your driving, shooting, and fighting abilities. The upgrade mechanism is important because while it's an entertaining way to add new gameplay elements several hours in, the early game leaves you with so few moves that the game is hard, or worse,...See less
