There were scratches down the front and the seams were separating with the paint cracking. The seams looked like a five year-old had tried to paint over it. The knives looked like they had been used. There were some scratches on the blades of a couple of the knives, too. All and all, I felt like I had picked this up from a garage sale. This could have just been a damaged box since I read the reviews of others and they all seemed to like the knife set.
