When Spaniards landed on the island in the early 1500's they planted hundreds of Naranja orange trees. The island's climate, soil conditions and sparse rainfall did not provide appropriate growing conditions for their citrus crop, making a bitter and almost inedible fruit. Decades later it was discovered that the sun-dried peel of this orange produced an aromatic oil. The Senior family experimented with their liqueur recipe by adding exotic spices, and perfected the unique Curacao Liqueur. In 1896, production of Curacao for commercial sale began. Today, the Senior Curacao Liqueur Factory still distills and distributes the popular beverage, created with the original, and very secret, recipe and original distilling equipment.
