But Heart=Weapon doesn't just benefit from what it sounds like, but what it doesn't: a pose. There's nothing unoriginal or co-opted about their infectious enthusiasm or their free-flowing songwriting chops. Brent Messenger's nasal yelp comes off like an unhinged Howard Jones, and works wonders on the rockabilly chunk of "Chemical Burns" or the borderline electro of "Signs of Life." Every song's a driver, full of momentum and release. MIM contains the perfect mix of Smiths' style songs including both fast and slow, fun and political. I remember back in the 80's when 'Spin Magazine' had "How Soon Is Now?" ranked as the best single of all time. I also remember thinking, "You know, that isn't even one of my favorite Smiths' songs." Actually not even my fave from this album. To me HSIN had great lyrics and a cool sound but was generally not very Smiths-like. The song lacked the rawness and edge of their other material due to its high-gloss production... precisely NOT the point of the band. Still it's a wonderful song with a catchy, highly original melody and Mozz' sharp wit. I've always been partial to the underappreciated songs from this album. The lyrics are mostly about Stevens, not Illinois. The historical references promised by the song titles don't get developed; they're window dressing. What does the song "Black Hawk War" have to do with Indians? What does "Chicago" have to do with the city? What does "Casmire Polaski Day" have to do with the holiday? Very little as it turns out. Mary Todd Lincoln? Just a nice illustration on the sleeve. Lyrically Illinois is little more than a tourist postcard. That is Until you come to "John Wayne Gacy Jr." This, of all subjects, is the one Illinois figure he chooses to treat in detail. I lived through the Gacy era when I was a kid. First I'll explain my title. Don't expect the typical routine of, "Here I am; listen to me say a bunch of funny stuff." Demetri really pushes comedy to the limits. Expect guitar solos, glockenshpiels, and bells because this album has it all. You'll hear jokes told over light guitar picking and you'll hear jokes over electro beats. He tells plenty of jokes without background music, but in some cases it really does add to the hilarity of the joke. I'm glad to say you won't hear very many pop culture or current event references. His rare style of comedy is fast and furious, very reminiscent of the late Mitch Hedberg. Short and sweet is the name of this man's game. By talking about everyday things I think his comedy should appeal to most people. If you haven't seen his Comedy Central special then you'll get an extra treat by watching it on the bonus DVD.
