Big Bad Voodoo Daddy did more than any other band to fuel the sing revival of the '90s, due largely to the group's appearance in the 1996 film Swingers. Since then, the craze has waned, although you couldn't tell it by BBVD. If anything, the combo has approaches their fifth album with more gusto and verve than ever, infusing their old-school jive and greasy horns with a New Orleans sensibility and panache and, in the process, creating their strongest album yet. Although their songs sound like they were lifted right out of the Zoot-suited '40s, the band writes all their own material, taking swing into a raw and modern direction. Taking the cue for its visual conception from sources as diverse as British cartoonist Gerald Scarfe and the antic, rubbery surrealism of Tex Avery's Warner Bros. Cartoons of the 30's, this madcap caper from French writer/director Sylvain Chomet is one of the most delightfully skewed animated films in recent memory. Scoring such a thorough original is no easy task, but composer/musician Benoit Charest has more than risen to the occasion. Charest manages to evoke the loopy musical spirit of legendary Warner and Disney animation legend Carl Stalling in an entirely new context, fusing the score's snappy, predominantly le hot jazz mindset with everything from hip-hop and Bach (credited her as "Jean Sebastien") to the Italian opera farrago "Cieco Cieco Barber" and 1960s proto-surf-rock of "Pa Pa Pa Palavas." In the opening track of this live CD, Michael Bublé explodes "I'm feeeling GOOD!" Who could blame him? He's backed by a big--make that a really big--band, and the song sounds like a million bucks. You may quibble that Bublé is a nice fellow who's a bit lacking in both the charisma and swing departments, but the music here percolates with bouncing energing--just listen to "Summer Wind" or "The More I See You" to see how glorious arrangements (by Johnny Mandel and John Clayton Jr., respectively) can propulse a reasonably gifted but by no means transcendent singer into the stratosphere. Best of all, Bublé once again shows his ability to seamlessly bridge eras and styles by offering stylistically consistent covers of the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love" (done swing-style) and Lou Rawls' 1976 hit "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" (done crooner-style in a duet with Italian singer Laura Pausini). In the run-up to this, her third album, Joss Stone told a phalanx of glossy magazines that the difference between this disc and the two that preceded it was a newfound clarity of vision. Whereas the other records--their gold status notwithstanding--represented the fumblings of a huge-voiced kid being bossed around by experienced music-biz types, this one, she promised, would reveal the real her. Thus, the titular "introduction." To which anybody who spins the 14 groovy and fully unbuttoned tracks herein will wish to reply not "nice to meet you"--far too lame a sentiment for so fully realized a disc--but "Where have you been all my life?" As with the best of Connick's music, When Harry Met Sally resonates with a whimsical yet sophisticated and urbane energy. That smooth, breathy tenor, combined with some inventive arrangements, brought color and setting to the film, playing a plum supporting role for Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. Beyond the film, this collection of reworked standards stands on its own quite well. A lustrous vocal line bookends the hopping instrumental swing in the middle of "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," playing that song's central melancholy up with a Nelson Riddle-esque big-band sweep. The audio portion kicks off with pair of new studio recordings again reinforce the 20-something Canadian heartthrob's 1950s-something artistic tack with mixed results: "Nice 'n' Easy" has a Sinatra-faithful jazzy swing; the overproduced, somnambulistic "Can't Help Falling in Love" evokes Perry Como more than Elvis. Sugar Blue is best known for his signature harmonica riff--at once bluesy and tuneful--on the Rolling Stones' hit, "Miss You," but he has recorded with everyone from Stan Getz and Bob Dylan to Willie Dixon and Johnny Shines. The diversity of those experiences helps account for the pop melodicism, jazzy harmonics and bluesy note-bendings of Sugar Blue's harmonica playing, but only his individual talent can account for the pure, piercing tone he achieves on the instrument. His latest album, "Blue Blazes," includes his own interpretation of "Miss You" as well as versions of Dixon's "Back Door Man" and other blues standards by James Cotton, Jimmy McCracklin and Jimmy Rogers. One can almost hear Stevie Wonder's beaded braids clattering in time to their deep, funky grooves. At best, the band conjures up latter-day Motown, complete with a shuddering organ and hyperbolic vocals; at worst, they sound like a stylized boy band, with all the attendant close harmonies and dramatic pauses.
