The Skinny on Lip Plumpers

Posted by jinnyjinn on Mar 24, 2009

I don’t know about you but many of the plumpers I’ve played with hurt my lips! So the question is: Is it true what they say about lip plumpers—no pain, no gain? The answer? Yes and no. Many of the plumping products you see at the department store or drugstore work because ingredients such as cinnamon, peppermint, ginger, and wintergreen irritate lips—which causes blood vessels to swell—and voilà!—You have fuller, albeit inflamed, lips. Of course, the effect is only temporary. Popular plumpers with irritating ingredients include:

Lip Venom by Duwop ($16)
Urban Decay Big Fatty Lip Plumper ($17)
Freeze 24/7 Lip Plumper ($40)
Too Faced Lip Injection ($27.50)
Stila Plumping Lip Glaze ($24)

More sensitive than sadistic? You’re in luck: Some plumpers feel more tingly than tortuous upon application. Like what? Try LipFusion Color Shine ($36), which works by adhering collagen micro spheres to the lip tissue. When these spheres absorb moisture, they expand, leaving lips looking fuller and smoother—sans the aggravation.

Give me your skinny on fuller lips—are you a no pain, no gain type of gal?

Yikes. I don't think this stuff is for me.
I'm pretty happy with my lips anyhow.

I tried one once and it did absolutely nothing for me. No tingling more than a menthol-y lip balm and no plumping. I don't get it. Heh.

I don't think they're meant to be lip plumpers, but I love the minty lip glosses from Bath and Body Works. You can get a tinted one or one that tastes like lemon lollipops, or mojito (minty and limey!).

Yeah, I once read up on that that is how lip plumper worked. And of course, if you're sensitive to that kind of thing, then the product isn't for you. I've tried once before, when I received it as a sample, from Bare Essentials, I believe, and it was tingly and uncomfortable.

Boy, the things we do for beauty, eh?

@kitsune01 Amen sister!

My sister put one of these on me once with out telling me what it was and it totally freaked me out! I don't recall my lips looking more plump, but they felt puffy.

I'm quite fine with my lips as they are. No plumping (or irritation) necessary thank you. :)
