This organically shaped chair has since become synonymous with Danish furniture design throughout the world. Because of the unique shape, the Egg guarantees a bit of privacy in otherwise public spaces, and the Egg with or without ottoman is ideal for lounge and waiting areas as well as the home. The Egg originated in Arne Jacobsen's garage - cast in plaster. In Holland, Polder refers to the artificial land reclaimed from the sea by means of dykes and drainage canals. The body of the Polder sofa is just as low-lying, just as flat, and has just as much emphasis on the horizontal as does the Dutch landscape. For it, Hella Jongerius chose five carefully selected combinations of colors and fabric qualities, accentuating them with high-tech threads and large buttons. This play with colours and textures underscores the asymmetry of the piece, and together with the large buttons decorating the cushions are unmistakable trademarks of the Polder Sofa. In other words, he could make them go only so far in becoming the structure he desired. With new technologies, however, the old rules no longer applied and he was able to shape fluid curves and single-piece molded shells. The Swan Chair is now made from polyurethane foam, but at the time, Jacobsen used Styropore® to create its continuous shape. Designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, for which Jacobsen was the architect, the chair's swivel base permitted guests to spin in their seat, thus becoming active participants in the busy hotel atmosphere. Crafted from three-dimensional veneer, this chair realizes the single shell molded plywood chair that Charles Eames held as an ideal. The modern material is the result of Reholz technology that molds a 3D form of plywood in two ways: concave for the seating area and convex for the arms. It's a shape that was previously available only in plastic chairs, never before with the warmth of wood. The 3D process uses six layers of oak veneer, bonded together for a fluent shell that's only 6mm thick. Strong and comfortable, the Cox Chair swivels on its four slim legs and the deep seat is slightly shaped like a Windsor chair. Lightly scaled, with soft curves and clearly defined edges, it is suitable for dining, lounge or office.
