There were no doubt many reasons for carrying the Coustille. It was short enough to pass as a dagger in the walled towns and cities where only nobles were allowed to carry a sword openly, but it was still long and wide enough to defend against a sword attack. It was easy to ride with, as it could be thrust under a belt in varying positions. It has been suggested that the Coustille was favored by the typical man-at-arms for the main purpose of cutting the throats of prisoners that could not pay a ransom!
