Frommer's Review Although tourists now know to filter behind the Palazzo Pubblico to this large family-run trattoria, locals still hang on vigorously, returning for the simple but good Sienese fare. In summer, you can dine alfresco on the unsightly piazza with a view of the Terza di San Martino. If you're eating inside, head to the left of the door or upstairs for wood-ceilinged ambience -- the modern room to the right is where they try to stick all the tourists. The pappardelle al sugo di cinghiale (noodles in wild boar sauce) is a traditional dish, while the pici alla cardinale (chewy fat spaghetti in tomato sauce with hot peppers and chunks of pancetta) is a bit more original. Keep it spicy with coniglio all'arabbiata (rabbit cooked in white wine, rosemary, and sage with a pinch of pepperoncino), or try anatra alla Tolomei (duck stewed with tomatoes). See less

Along with a comprehensive list of the city's best flavors and gelaterie, I'd like to give a little gelato primer, if you will, on how to choose an ice cream you won't regret (in case you forget the list I've prepared at home). 1. Start by looking for signs that say produzione propria, which means "house made," though even this is often not enough to guarantee that the gelato will be any good. 2. Every time I enter a new gelateria, I glance at the pistachio flavor. If it's neon green, then I leave. For me, this is a better indicator than produzione propria, because even homemade ice cream can be full of artificial flavors. Frommer's Review Their recent expansion sadly removed the last wisps of Renaissance aura from La Casalinga, replacing it with a crowded, almost cafeteria-like feeling -- but the home cooking of its name is still some of the most genuine in town. The ribollita is thick, the ravioli al sugo di coniglio (in a rabbit sauce) rich, and the pasta della nonna (short, hollow pasta in a sauce of tomatoes, sausage, and onions) excellent. Don't expect anything fancy in the secondi department either, just solid favorites like bollito misto (a mix of boiled meats with green sauce), trippa alla fiorentina, and galletto ruspante al forno (half a young oven-baked chicken). The starving artists and local artisans have been all but driven out by the tourist hordes, but if you want to stuff yourself on huge portions of Oltrarno workman's food, this is the place to come. Its name, "Novella", comes from the fact that it was built on the site of a 9th century oratory, called Santa Maria delle Vigne, which had already been enlarged in 1094. In 1221 this church and the surrounding area was assigned to the Dominican monks, who immediately began to transform it. Construction started on what were to be the sumptuous headquarters of the powerful Dominican Order in 1246; designed by two architect monks, Fra Sisto Fiorentino and Fra Ristoro da Campi, it was completed in 1360 under the direction of Fra Iacopo Talenti, who also designed the Spanish Chapel or chapter house (1350-55), the convent Refectory (1353) and the great pointed belltower in Romanesque-Gothic style (1330). Frommer's Review This former trattoria has gone midscale and greatly improved its menu to offer excellent innovative dishes rooted in Sienese traditions in a classy, but not frosty, atmosphere of soft jazz. The main dining room is a crazy medieval mélange of stone, brick, wood supports, and naked rock, while the rooms in back and in the basement are actually Etruscan tombs carved from the tufa. Pici al ragout di lepre (thick hand-rolled pasta strands in hare ragù) and gnochetti di patate con erbe cipollina e pecorino di fossa (gnocchi with chives on a parmigiana pastry crust swimming in melted pecorino cheese) are palate-pleasing primi. For the main course, they ascribe to the growing school of Italian cooking wherein a side dish is included with each secondo (making a meal here less costly than the prices below would suggest). Where should I go and what should I do?". Just one day, too bad. Let's try to help you anyway. St.Mark's square is a "must". So, let's suppose you get to Venice quite early in the morning. If you arrive by flight, get the motor taxi or "Alilaguna" boat (cheaper) from the airport to St.mark's. First of all: have a map ready with you. Walk in the square, visit the Church (if there's a long queue in front of you, calculate your available time and the line speed) and Palazzo Ducale (you'll also walk inside the Bridge of Sighs!). Go back to the square, and take your time to walk around, towards the sea, towards Rialto bridge or the Academy Galleries, if you are fond of art. I'd already failed once, a week before, having fled Venice when I mistakenly booked a hotel in a distant suburb, Lido di Jesolo. But in Bologna, I'd begun to feel the pull of the Venice, and returned by train (7.90 euros) for this, the fourth in my series of weekly round-the-world Frugal Traveler columns. This time I stayed in the correct Lido, which many readers smartly recommended as a cheaper alternative. The long, skinny island is a few minutes from central Venice by vaporetto, the bus-like boats that connect the 118 islands that make up Venice.
