(09/08/09) A massive gable dominates the facade above the front porch. The 3 story tower at the Southwest corner is ornamented beneath its round topped roof with faces with cherubs. The exterior of the Shurtleff house-its stone-linteled arching windows highlighted by strongly dimensional detailing, and original ornamental leaded stained glass windows(12) in is superb condition. Typical of this era, the original woodwork, 4 pocket doors, gas lights(converted), bench seats, paneling w/ concealed openings, coat rack w/ built in umbrella stand, and 40' turret are nearly perfect. Highlighting the dramatic interior are 2 fireplaces w/ ornamental arched stained glass windows recessed into the chimney, and marching the ornamental windows leading to the 2nd story.See less

(09/08/09) The English Inn is a stunning Italianate-style Victorian built in 1885 by Henry Bash. Conveniently located just a few blocks from the Uptown Historic District, the grand house sits on large private grounds surrounded by beautiful gardens with holly trees that Henry planted himself. Dreams of Victorian grandeur and commercial prominence awaited the Port Townsend of 1880's. One such visionary was Albert Bash who arrived in 1881 and worked as a customs collector for the Puget Sound region. His father, Henry C. Bash, followed in 1883 to take up duties as an Inspector of Customs, and soon, as U.S. Shipping Commissioner. Henry completed construction of his grand, yet modest home in 1885. Although Henry had a large office at the U.S. Customs House, now the Post Office on Washington Street, he often had visitors present themselves at his home in his study (now the Dining Room at the Inn) bearing gifts of coral and exotic birds, which now reside at Jefferson County Historic Museum. The house...See less

(09/08/09) The Historic Huff / Lamberton home was originally built by Charles Huff, who platted the city of Winona. Building it of brick and stone with 16" walls, he felt it needed to be strong and enduring like the town he helped to found. It was built over a period of two years with the best materials available and the most skilled craftsmen. Charles was the founder of the Huff House hotel. 15 years later it was purchased by the Lamberton family, prominent bankers and lawyers, who continued to improve the property, adding electricity, central heating, elevator, and eventually, air conditioning. Bas-relief decorations for the music room were imported from France and from Czechoslovakia came hand-cut crystal chandeliers. After Mrs. Lamberton died in the mid-1950's, the home became an orphanage for a time and then an assisted living facility. It is an imposing structure with a prominent tower, carriage house and ornate porch, another addition by the Lambertons. Set on a 1.5 acre parcel across from...See less
