When this movie first came to DVD, I was only a small child. I remember watching it with my mother, and when Margot was soaking in the bathtub and being moapy, it seemed just like how I was at that age (I always liked to write.) Now I am older, and I still like Margot Tenenbaum. Her mod dresses are lovely. I feel like she was painted a little 2 dimmensional though. They should have focused a little more on her prior marriage ect and a little less on her angst. Not that I do not enjoy angst, it's just that Margot came off as a little bit of an angst write stock character. But more important than that, I find myself liking movies mostly for the atmosphere. The mood The Royal Tenenbaums set can be very lovely. The childlike portraits of Margot that Richie drew were so very wonderful. I wish I could draw like that. Sometimes TRT is sucessful at making the storybook childish feel and it's 5 stars, but other times it gets a little slow. I didn't like hearing about their mother and her book... See less

All the traumas of teendom come down on one long day, which sees Samantha surrounded by dithery relatives, mooning over a high school hunk, and pursued by a sawed-off Lothario. Sixteen Candles marked the directing debut of John Hughes, and its goofy energy displayed a promising talent with a great ear for high school lingo ... a promise neglected since Hughes became, after Home Alone, a one-man entertainment industry. This is one of my favourite movies, because it truly understands the hearts of grown up girls, their love of fantasy and lure the dark & dangerous lad that leads us down the garden path. It's a wonderful tale, with marvellous tunes that linger on and on. From "It's Only Forever", "Underground" and "Chilly Down" but most especially "As the World Falls Down". Sigh, such a beautiful and deftly filmed Cinderella Ball for Adults. I don't know a woman that loves this film who does not say "I want that dress!". Sarah is an easy to relate to teen. She is part child - part woman, one foot in each world and truly not belonging to either. Added to this, her father has remarried and has little time to spend on his growing daughter. We are not told, but it's clear her mother is dead. Mom was an actress and lover of the magic and she passed this on to her lovely daughter. So says Paul Verhoeven, who has said (and says again in the commentary on this DVD release) that it's one of the statements made by this morally complex film. I love listening to Verhoeven's commentaries (especially the one he does with Arnold Schwarzenegger on _Total Recall_). Here he shares the task with screenwriter Ed Neumeier, and putting the two of them together was an excellent choice. The commentary is one of the best features of the special edition. The film itself is hard to evaluate. Because it's Verhoeven, it's got sex, gore, and social satire. What it's also got -- and something that was arguably missing from the Robert A. Heinlein novel on which the film is based -- is a high level of moral complexity that doesn't divide everyone neatly into Good Guys and Bad Guys. The effect is odd, and oddly disturbing. On one hand, the film succeeds quite well as a combat shoot-'em-up in the style of the great World War II films. At that level, if we like, we can take the 'bugs' of... See less

Once again, for some strange reason, it has been decided that Shakespeare didn't know what he was doing, and actually, the setting for the film is Italy, not Athens. And as the film opens we discover that characters like Hippolyta (Queen of the Amazons) and Theseus (Duke of Athens) actually live in a 19th century villa. Rather remarkable, that. Oh, and wait till you hear! Nick Bottom the Weaver has a wife. Where she came from, I guess we'll never know. She even has a speaking part. There's also the mystery of the bicycles. They're definitely not from Athens or from Greek mythology. And the fairies' haunts in the woods look amazingly pre-Raphaelite. All that aside, there are some nice performances in this film. Stanley Tucci does a wonderful Puck, Kevin Kline actually manages to do a good job with Bottom once his wife is out of the picture, and the other tradesmen are quite well done.
