(12/06/07) Leon Gast's documentary about the legendary Ali-Foreman fight works on all advertised levels. It is a fascinating snapshot of central Africa in the mid-1970s and a glimpse of Muhammad Ali at the peak of his charisma. The blow-by-blow account of the match is riveting even for people who could care less about boxing. Beneath its colorful exterior, however, lurks a disturbing political subtext that reveals how deeply cynical American attitudes towards Africa can be, even when those attitudes are held by African Americans. When the "Rumble in the Jungle" promoters traveled to Zaire in 1974, they were entering one of the worst disaster zones in post-colonial Africa. Fourteen years earlier, Joseph Mobutu had seized power after torturing and murdering Patrice Lumumba, the leader of the nationalist movement and Zaire's first Prime Minister. He did so with the help of the CIA, who had fingered Lumumba as a potential troublemaker. Mobutu's government (which lasted until his overthrow in 1997)...See less

(12/06/07) From Publishers Weekly If there is one fault in this wonderful and long overdue collection of nonfiction master Talese's magazine writings, it's that there is simply not enough. While this reader does not include selections from such bestselling books as The Kingdom and the Power (a look at the New York Times, where he was a reporter for 10 years), Honor Thy Father (his behind-the-scenes look at the Bonanno crime organization) or Thy Neighbor's Wife (his examination in the shift of sexual mores in the decades before AIDS), it does highlight writing from his 1993 bestselling book, Unto the Sons, which deals with his Italian-born father's journey to America. However, all of the essays collected here are priceless gems, including his classic profiles of 20th-century icons such as Joe DiMaggio ("The Silent Season of the Hero"); the recently departed George Plimpton and his Paris Review cohorts ("Looking for Hemingway"); and Frank Sinatra ("Frank Sinatra Has a Cold"), which was recently...See less

(12/06/07) No matter how many times I read one of his books, Greene just never seems to connect with me. At least in this-his one book that in his own words was "written to a thesis"-at least I understand why. Based heavily on his travels to the southern Mexican states of Jalisco and Chiapas in early 1938, Greene set out to examine faith and personal integrity. Greene's "thesis" is that even those who are sinners may still posses God's grace if they hold true to their faith regardless of personal hardship. I find that line of reasoning to be a rather tempting excuse for hypocrisy, and have to wonder what the point of being a priest is if you're going to pick and chose which rules you live by. Priests should live the gospel, not just do their best! An excellent nonfiction book that shows priests doing just that under incredibly difficult circumstances is John Kiser's The Monks of Tibhirine. In any event, Green's plot is simple: in an unnamed Mexican state, Catholicism has been outlawed by the...See less

(12/06/07) It's so rare that someone comes along who hit the political and social nail on the head. I AM AMERICA AND SO CAN YOU does that and more. Colbert has a knack for the truth and his way of presenting it so that you're caught off guard is at once compelling and remarkable. Many times it's only after he's moved on that you get the joke. And the thing that will catch those of you who DON'T know about Colbert is this: He LOOKS so Republican but is quite the opposite. Pulling no punches, he covers everything from religion to homosexuality and makes us laugh. But his humor often goes beyond that, exposing hypocrisy and the religious right for who they are. Even Islam is not safe as it is on so many media formats. I do have to say that, even with all this, I did not find the book offensive. Colbert's tongue-in-cheek reminded me of the wit of David Sedaris (his book ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY comes to mind), and the sheer amount of upkeep on current affairs boggles the mind. There's also no profanity...See less
