Rocks within the Chewelah quadrangle record a complex and varied structural history from the Late Proterozoic to the Eocene, one that is characterized by several discrete periods of igneous intrusion, folding, normal and reverse faulting, and repeated reactivation of faults during succeeding periods of faulting. The western third of the quadrangle includes a segment of the Kootenay arc, a highly faulted and folded allochthonous sequence of Middle and Late Proterozoic and Paleozoic rocks. Within the quadrangle these rocks have a consistent north-northeast strike. The Jumpoff Joe Fault sharply defines the east boundary of the Kootenay arc, juxtaposing it against coeval rocks of the Belt Supergroup and Paleozoic rocks that have distinctly different structural and lithostratigraphic characteristics. Much of the eastern half of the Chewelah quadrangle is underlain by the western part of the (informal) Priest River complex, which consists of intermixed, heterogeneous two-mica granitic rocks... While it still doesn't compare to the first four or five books, Knife of Dreams is probably the best novel in the Wheel of Time series since Fires of Heaven. The good news is numerous plot lines advance and the writing shows the effect of a full editing cycle. The bad news is that the good writing here oddly illuminates how much of a hole author Robert Jordan dug for himself with the mess of the previous novels - with it being made very clear even a writer of his talent probably won't be able to resolve the plethora of details even with another couple of books. I take a star off for letting a number of details and characters slip along with another half star for a pace that at times returns to near-plodding, but I'll round it up from 3.5 stars to four for the progress here that makes me have high hopes for the next book. By the accounts I have read, Robert Jordan's fantasy megaseries "The Wheel of Time," the ninth volume of which is due for release in late 2000, was originally intended as a six-volume saga. Whatever the motivation--more money made on more volumes, characters or fantasyland more interesting (and thus worth more verbiage) than first estimated, what have you--the original plan is moot, and we the readers are faced with a series half again as long as first advertised, with no end in sight. This situation would be more palatable if the events that take place within "The Wheel of Time" had not begun to follow the monotonous pattern that this episode first set up, to wit: Rand Al'Thor flits about various kingdoms under his nominal control to no apparent purpose, Aes Sedai women scheme and plot against him and each other, other female characters bicker and argue, all while the forces of darkness pull strings in the background and seemingly have the better knowledge of what is really... A remarkably entertaining series, thanks almost entirely to the performances, chemistry, warmth, and humor of the two leads, Duncan Renaldo and Leo Carillo. I had very fond memories of watching this on Sunday morning reruns in the 1970s, and I was very pleasantly surprised to discover that I was enjoying this DVD release even more than I'd expected to! I also realized a few other things - like how Carillo's expression "Let's went" (instead of "Let's go") had entered into my own vocabulary, and how fun Pancho's dialogue often was in general (listen to his wonderful song at the beginning of the episode "Convict Story" for example). For content, this DVD release (20 different episodes) rates a 5 out of 5. Now for the bad news. This show was shot and aired in the early 1950s. The picture quality of the episodes on DVD is not very good. It's certainly not terrible, but I'd describe the picture as very soft (almost blurry), with some tint problems (it looks like they tried to fix the color... See less
