Fronted by saxophone and two-string slide bass guitar, Morphine earned a modicum of critical praise for their prior recording, Good, but Cure for Pain has a harder edge and a distinctly bigger sound. "Buena" urges the listener, with singer and bassist Mark Sandman's best come-hither baritone voice, "closer to the front of the stage," and then "Candy" tells a love-lost story that could come right out of Tom Waits's book. But for all the strange possibilities inherent in a guitarless band that plays off their singer's wry lyrics, Morphine's sophomore effort shows their versatility, their ability to be a rock band in a very unrock, rolling-baritone-saxophone way. - David Tennant made a good Hamlet. I've never seen Doctor Who or much else he's been in, so I went in pretty fresh. He was good. This isn't a great production (I wonder if it worked better on stage), but it's definitely worth a watch.

(10/03/11) A play some find hard to grip onto and understand, though even the greatest player has done a fine job in the role of Hamlet, David Tennant seems to be able to build on the character once portrayed by the great Kenneth Branagh. Gregory Doran has found a way to film one of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies in such a way to be able to convey emotion even without a proscenium to do so on. The accumulative cast of Tennant, Stewart, Downie, Jersey and more bring together the story and breathe a life into it in a style that had yet to be used. The incorporation of modernism that the RSC has brought to it can speak well to a younger generation of Shakespeare enthusiasts, and all around the work is a brilliant piece.See less
