With Alexander the Great’s conquest of the Persian Empire in 331 B.C., the lands under his control stretched from Greece and Asia Minor through Egypt and the Near East to India. As a result of this contact with cultures far and wide, Greek arts were exposed to a host of new exotic influences. Increased commercial and cultural exchanges and the greater mobility of goldsmiths and silversmiths led to the establishment of a common artistic language in which strikingly similar images and styles coexisted in distant corners of the Hellenistic world. Vast quantities of gold passed into circulation in the Hellenistic world, and gold jewelry became more popular. Our ring is reproduced from a master mold taken directly from a bracelet from around 300–250 B.C. and now in the Museum’s collection. The Viking period began when Scandinavian warriors, driven from their homeland by social pressures, political strife, and quest for trade, raided coastal lands in the British Isles and Europe, even reaching North America. Aided by their swift, elegantly built ships, the Vikings (named after the Old English word for “pirate”) explored and colonized vast regions, trading from Greenland to Constantinople. Viking men and women wore jewelry as a visible badge of wealth and status. The decorative vocabulary of weapons, pins, brooches, pendants, and buckles made of precious metals and bronze was dominated by stylized animal patterns, sometimes reaching an abstraction of great complexity and sophistication. After Egypt came under the rule of the Hellenistic Greeks (323–27 B.C.), and later became a province of the Roman empire (after 27 B.C.), ancient Egyptian jewelry, with its characteristic forms, materials, and colors, nearly ceased to be manufactured. Jewelry was still made and worn in Egypt during the Greco-Roman period, but it was no longer distinctively Egyptian. Whereas the Egyptians had created their jewelry around amuletic shapes with symbolic meanings, Greco-Roman jewelry celebrated the rarity, value, and beauty of the materials used. Late in the Hellenistic period, emerald mines were discovered in the Red Sea hills of Egypt; in the Roman era, craftsmen especially favored the use of this stone. Our classic ring is based on an original ring in the Museum’s collection that is set with a cylindrical emerald found in Egypt and stylistically datable to the period of Roman rule during the 1st century A.D. 14K gold with 24K gold plate and emerald. Peter Carl Fabergé (Russian, 1846–1920) revolutionized the way jewelry was evaluated in Russian society by emphasizing creativity and workmanship over the use of precious stones and metals. His studio produced a wide variety of objets d'art, including magnificent jewelry, clocks, enamel cigarette cases, boxes, frames, and his ultimate achievement, a series of jeweled Easter eggs created for Czars Alexander III and Nicholas II of Russia. These delicate “works of fantasy” often memorialized important occasions in the reign of the Imperial Romanov family. The design of the Museum’s ring is adapted from a band decorated with moonstones from an urn-shaped nephrite vase that Czar Nicholas II presented to King Edward VII in 1908. This is a twig like copper ring- textured, beaten and twisted to shape. I start off with thin copper sheet metal, hammer it and then shape it into a small twig like form that wraps around the finger. I left it with the natural heat oxide and scratched back to some of the coppery highlights with a Scotchbrite pad. This ring is sized at nearly 15 mm inside diameter, close to a size 5. Because it is not soldered, it can be adjusted a little bit up or down. If you would like me to adjust the size, please make a note in the "message to seller" during the checkout process. I do not re-size rings after they are shipped, so please check your ring size before you order. Please double check by measuring the inside diameter of the sizing ring or one of your own rings.
