designboom previously featured the home and office of architects silvia mertens and pieter peerlings located in antwerp. this skinny home stacks 4 stories one on top of another in an area only 2.4m wide. 'starting with a space just 2.4m wide, the dimensions offered no choice but to build upwards: four stories, stacked tightly between two buildings, each section offering four different living or working spaces. on the ground floor, the office; the second floor, the dining room; the third floor, the living room and the fourth floor, the bedroom. deciding on the floorplan became a matter of modesty rather than convention as the entire frontage of the building is glazed and open to the outside world. it stands as a light art installation for passers by and an exercise in exhibitionism which salutes to the less than salubrious past of the area. the bathtub, situated on the rooftop, seals this notion, out of the way of most prying eyes but still deliciously extroverted.' Recently, however, especially in his native Finland, there has been an exodus from the countryside, with people moving to poorly built urban constructions, and the tradition has largely been lost. Rintala is interested in incorporating traditions from other cultures, too. The galley of the Boxhome is a fully integrated kitchen and dining room, and the resident would eat and entertain in the Japanese style on a platform at a low table; the two hot plates and sink in the surface of the table are nods to the Korean way of eating. (Guests are given the raw materials which they cook themselves.) It is sociable and guarantees that the food is hot and prepared exactly to each person’s requirements. Wouldn't it be nice to have a boat that your family could take out to nearby pristine sandy beaches with crystal clear blue water and billions of tropical fishes? And wouldn't it be nice if, somehow, that boat didn't disrupt the fishes, or the environment, in any way? And while we're dreaming (here in Montana we haven't escaped from the 40s yet, and it's raining), let's throw in some solar panels as well. Well, that's the dream that Jonathan Mahieddine is throwing at us. It's a pedal-powered boat for four. And if you get tired (or step on a stingray) there's always the solar-powered electric motor to get you home again. See less
