Amazon.com The Shins' sophomore album is a joy from start to finish, though it's rather different from their 2001 leftfield pop genius stunner Oh, Inverted World. That album was like a warm embrace from a long-lost pal. True to its title, all of the songs were of a piece, seeming to inhabit one landscape, with an invitingly similar sound throughout. Chutes is more far-reaching and decidedly eclectic. Each song is essentially its own genre exercise. There's singer-songwriter James Mercer's surprisingly Perry Farrell-ish wail on the almost indie-metal opener, "Kissing the Lipless"; the lovely pedal steel lilt to "Gone for Good"; the moody folktronica of "Those to Come"; and the Cars-gone-rockabilly riffing on "Turn a Square." The strongest song, the acoustic "Young Pilgrims," is stripped-down and brilliant. On every tune, Mercer packs more hooks and melodic invention than most bands do on one album. The Shins' took four years to release the follow-up to Chutes Too Narrow, Wincing The Night Away. Despite the length, the band's popularity rose thanks to two of their songs being used in the film Garden State and a line in the film stating that band would change your life. Thus the stakes are pretty high for the band and the new album delivers. "Sleeping Lessons" is strong opening track that is sweeping number that floats between airy keyboards and acoustic guitars before sliding into a slamming electrified end. "Phantom Limb" is the song that closely mirrors their previous work, which isn't a bad thing. "Australia" has an 80's R.E.M. vibe with its jangling guitar riff. "Sea Legs" and "Red Rabbits" depart from the band's usual sound with a pumping bassline prominent on the former and a caribbean sounding beat on the latter. The new vocals meld into what Underoath has been evolving to become for years: a cleaner, more direct heavy rock style avoiding any hardcore clichis they might have previously garnered. A wildly successful tour with Dismemberment Plan, a collaboration for singer Ben Gibbard with emo-electronic guru Dntel under the Postal Service moniker, and a whole new legion of fans swooning to Gibbard's lyrics as if he were a modern day answer to Kiss Me-era Robert Smith have all amassed considerable hype around Transatlanticism.
