(10/19/08) Submitted by joshSVUG [Respond | View] The journey to mastering Perl requires at least three (3) steps :) One optional route would be to read: 1) Learning Perl 2) Intermediate Perl and finally 3) Mastering Perl brian d foy mentions in his introduction and appendix A that the path to mastery involves learning from many people and to learn from brian is an advantage. Appendix A is a list of Further Reading and by following up on many of these compounds the effect of the book. You get the bang for your buck. Chapter 3 on Secure Programming Techniques is helpful because it places the topic front and center. This topic should find its way downstream into Learning Perl to encourage secure programming as early as possible. I found immediate value in the chapters on benchmarking, profiling (especially DBI profiling) and logging. The chapters on Cleaning Up Perl (chapter 7: perltidy and de-obfuscation) and Configuring Perl (chapter 11: dealing with switches) are a great recap of material...See less

(10/19/08) Submitted by Michael Gimbel [Respond | View] Intermediate Perl is the prefect next step. Having used Perl before, Beginning Perl was a nice refresher. However, it left me pondering the details and how Perl dealt with references and objects. Intermediate Perl introduced these concepts gently, yet with enough detail to give the reader a full understanding. Almost every chapter is limited to 10 or 12 pages, yet is still able to cover complete topics. This works great for learning a brand new concept or idea in a single sitting. Each chapter ends with 2 or 3 practice problems, proving quality not quantity is the way to go. Each of these practice problems also state how long it is expected to take. I especially enjoyed the 5-15 minute exercises, which reinforced concepts just read, but werent overwhelming. As with other OReilly books, Intermediate Perl teaches through examples. The book builds on similar problems throughout. The examples are quick and concise. Humor and Pop references...See less

(10/19/08) Submitted by GColgrove [Respond | View] I got this book because I wanted something easy to read and learn C#. My expectations were met. This book is very easy to follow. I feel the content is just as involved as the more wordy books but it leads you to the knowledge by practice rather then verbage. This book is a 700+/- page workbook that will aid you in learning the language effectively. It is not a reference book - unless you want examples. Examples and excersizes are presented similar to worksheets you would have had in elementary school, but the work is sophisticated enough for college entry. If you do all the excersizes you will be an efficient programmer in C#. For those who are visual learners; for those who have the attention span of an average A.D.D. student in elementary (i.e. me); for those who need to learn C# yesterday this book is for you. It will keep you going until you get to the last page. Enjoy! Unique and the first, friendly book about C# for everything!!!, April 27...See less
