(06/23/07) Although this book has lots of good features, they are negated by the sexist depiction of "Mrs. Noah." There are only six double-page spreads in the book, and one is devoted to making the point that it is "Mrs. Noah" that does the cleaning. If cleaning up after the animals had to be mentioned at all, showing everyone pitching in to help would have been a much healthier image for young children, especially girls. "I'm a wide-mouthed frog and I eat flies," he announces, demonstrating in flamboyant, 3-D splendor just how he got the appellation "wide-mouthed." Each spread features a different animal describing its meal of choice, including a blue-feathered bird (worms and slugs), a furry brown mouse (seeds and berries) and, finally, ominously, a big, green alligator. The creatures are depicted in sunny colors and and show off uncomplicated but large, well-constructed pop-up beaks, whiskers and snouts. (06/16/07) We've become great fans of the Duck series since our young daughter was born... the characters are endearing, the stories entertaining for all ages, and the text wonderfully melodic. Though we ordered this with great anticipation, we were greatly let down. It seems to be something that was patched together hastily to meet a deadline. It is rather short, the rhymes not nearly as entrancing as usual, the story brief and flat and, perhaps most annoying of all, we recognized many of the illustrations as being the exact same from other Duck books!
