(12/16/09) It’s difficult to tell if critics’ reactions to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies should be characterized as praise or astonishment. Some reviewers treated the book as a delightful gimmick. Others found that, beneath the surface, the book actually constituted an interesting way of looking at Austen’s novel. Zombies answer certain puzzling questions: Why were those troops stationed near Hertfordshire? Why did Charlotte Lucas actually marry Mr. Collins? (She had recently been bitten by zombies and wanted a husband who could be counted on to behead her—of course!) The ones who hate it will often remark that it is dense, unreadable, obscene, and pretentious. To them I say, just because you don't like/can't understand something doesn't mean it's no good. Just because you don't get the message doesn't mean that there isn't one. You don't have to like it, but please understand that it's not because every major literary critic has been wrong about it. Those who like it will often remark in hushed tones about "allusions" and "symbolism". There are allusions. There is symbolism. But that's really not the only noteworthy thing about this book. Get over the fact that it is acclaimed as the greatest novel of bla-di-bla-di-bla. Now if you'd like to devote yourself - and perhaps your life - to achieving an understanding of Finnegans Wake, you are certainly free to do so. And, having once attempted to achieve such understanding myself, I can assure you that some of your time will be well spent. But the facts are as follows: 1. Joyce was fluent in a number of European languages and had a nodding acquaintance with many more. 2. From this knowledge he fashioned a special vocabulary of multilingual blends and puns which he used, with ordinary English syntax, to create the solipsistic discourse of Finnegans Wake.
