Once upon a time, somebody asked how I do my zippers. Because I like to share knowledge, I decided I'd write up a little tutorial for my method (and probably the method of others, too). Because I am lazy busy, it's taken me a long time, but I finally got round to it. Some things: This is a tutorial for a zipped pouch, but you can use the same method on larger projects. If you put little 'end caps' on the ends of the zipper before sewing it into your project, you can have a zip that doesn't go all the way across, as with this purse. Doing that can take some jiggery pokery to get it to work, but it's not so difficult, really. So, are the sides of the bag are slanted like this / \? Or is it the straps that are slanted? Sorry if it's confusing. You'll need fabric for the body, face and bottom. Weighted filler and stuffing. Embroidery floss and trim. Print out the pattern. It's on a 1" grid. (Note on seam allowances. Your seam allowance will change depending on how big the trim you use is and how much of it you want it to show. How the base will fit onto the body will be determined on how big the seam allowance is. Sometimes the base and bottom with line up exactly, more often the base will be larger. This should make sense once you get going. If in doubt, just fudge it. That's how I get them done.) Pin the trim to the inner edge of the right side of one of the three sides. Sew trim to side leaving as much of the trim to show as you'd like. (see note above on seam allowances) Do the same with the trim on the other side. Cut one piece of backing fabric ( calico, or a stiffish cotton ) 27 x 18cm (11 1/4 x 7 ") and nine 18 x 3cm (7 x 1 1/4 ") strips from your chosen fabrics - I prefer to tear my fabrics rather than cut as I like frayed edges. Pin and stitch fabric strips onto backing along all edges. Turn over, and cut in half length-ways, stitching either side of your cutting line first to avoid your stitching running back. Now, with one of your pieces, fold in half length-ways and with your thread doubled, tie a knot and stitch along the raw edge using a fairly big running stitch. Before you gather, make cuts between your stitched lines, starting at the folded edge to about 1 cm (1/2") away from your running... See less

The fabric used for the tiny pincushion is a 19th Century Reproduction Fabric from Windham Fabrics. The fabric used for the large pincushion is a lovely print from Yuwa Fabrics. Wool Felt - I used plant dyed wool felt that I purchased from A Child's Dream Come True. I wanted you to have this in time for your weekend! Gather your felt, 6-strand embroidery thread, embroidery needle and scissors *1* Cut out lots and lots of felt cirlces in pairs. Each circle in the garland should be double layer, either matching or different on each side. For about a 5 or 6 foot garland, I cut out about 60 sets. Here goes, I'm going to try and do this but my computer keeps crashing, if there are any glaring errors I'll put them right asap. Here comes a poor quality photo again, I still haven't sussed out what's wrong with the scanner. Enlarge to whatever size you wish, just measure the length of baby's ( or Mama's ) foot. Cut 4 boot pieces and 2 sole pieces as shown. Now do the same for the lining. The easiest way to do this is to lay your fabric right sides together, and then pin and cut out together. Pin and stitch the sides of each boot ( right sides together) And then stitch the boot to the sole as shown, don't forget to mark the front and back centre points on the soles - it makes it a lot easier to position correctly. Now turn under and press a small hem at the top of each boot and it's lining. Now slot the lining into it's boot with wrong sides together, Finish off with a decorative stitch to close and maybe some yo-yo's. There's a great tutorial at Heather's. I suspect Mummy's have... A few things before we begin: ~ A wristlet is a small zippered pouch with a ribbon bracelet so it can be worn around the wrist. ~ My sewing is very much like Rachael Ray’s cooking — not at all precise, but a lot of fun. ~ If I can sew a zipper, a monkey can sew a zipper. A couple of people have asked me if I use a pattern for the little bags I sew. Not usually, but the bags are generally adaptations of one basic design. I thought I'd share that design in case anyone is interested. First, cut out the fabric! You can cut out either one piece where the fold would be the bottom of the bag or two pieces (you'd have to cut out two pieces if the pattern in the fabric goes in one direction; otherwise, the design would be upside down on one side of the bag). I use 1/4" seam allowances, so if you want the finished bag to be 5" wide and 7" tall, your one piece would need to be 5 1/2" wide and 14 1/2" long. The example is one piece, folded: You will want to cut a lining as well. It will be the same size as the exterior. Stitch the sides of the bag, right sides together and using a 1/4" seam. Step III-fold fabric with cut edges together. Each side of the fold should be the length of "A" measurement plus 2 inches. You will then need to fold a second time so that selvage edges meet (see next diagram) This step will form the basic shape of the T-Tunic arms. The arrow marked with "C" uses the following measurement equation: The C arrow = 1/2 the "C" measurement plus at least two inches. Only 1/2 the measurement of "C" is used do to the first fold of the fabric. Additional inches may be added for greater fullness of the sleeves.
