In this particular book, there are a series of comparisons between things that are quiet versus those that are loud. "Fishies are quiet. Doggies are loud." The comparisons are ones that kids would encounter such as snow being quiet while a rainstorm is loud; sniffles are quiet but sneezes are loud; birds are quiet and airplanes are loud. Although the latter is really not exactly true other factors enter into play such as your position relative to the bird or plane. Calling upon memories of objects it has seen, Little Cloud becomes a plane, a shark, trees, a rabbit and a clown before rejoining its peers. At this point they do what clouds are apt to do when they get together: "Then all the clouds changed into one big cloud and rained!" Popping out from a textured background of rich turquoise, Carle's luminous collage art features broad, swirling strokes reminiscent of fingerpainting. As minimalist as the text, these images may well inspire kids to cast more creative glances at the sky. The comparisons are items that kids would encounter such as spaghetti and worms, soup and soap, sandwiches and sand, cookies and coffee, chocolate sauce and hot sauce, burgers and boogers, eggs and earwax, fish sticks and fish food. The back two pages present even more yummy and yucky things. It is eclectic and at times a bit gross which will probably make it more appealing to kids and less so to adults. (06/02/07) I think this book is excellent for many reasons. The illustrations are wonderful and the story is interesting and humorous. My 3 yr. old loves to be read this book. The book also can help a parent teach a child about time: on about 15 of the pages appears an illustration of a clock with a different time corresponding with the text on that page. And the way the middle pages are cut so that you can see a bit of each of 12 (of the 40) pages at once, you can see the sun rising and falling as the day progresses from 6am past 5pm. (06/02/07) My husband and I have this book memorized. It comes in handy when we are out without books and have to wait in line or at the doctor's office. My sons (almost 2 years old) will stop their complaining to listen to the wonderful rhymes in this book. 'Big T, little t, what begins with t? Ten tired turtles on a tuttle-tuttle tree.' is a favorite page of mine. It is easy to find the rhythm of the rhymes so that you can clap along also. EVERY page has the same rhythm. I like the rhythm and the rhyming in this book. The size of it makes it easy to tote. It could be a staple in your diaper bag.
