But while Regina Spektor's music is anti-folk in the way it subverts the traditional coffeehouse vibe, it's less interested in rebellion and more concerned with the joy of eccentricity, melody and surprise. Begin To Hope is full of surprises, and like her promising major label debut Soviet Kitsch, it displays an easy facility with song structure that enables her to go in different--sometimes wildly off-the-wall--directions without sounding scattered. Classically trained on the piano, she's been compared to Tori Amos, but her music isn't as delicate or precious. (10/25/07) The first thing to know about Greetings from Michigan, the third album from Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens, is that its creator was born there. Few albums more clearly evoke their namesake: Towering pines, highways paved through granite walls, great lakes and deep valleys resonate in its gentle piano, muted trumpets, and close-mic'd production-- which is particularly odd, given that Stevens' home city is Detroit. It leads you to wonder how one could craft an album so delicate from an inspiration its author calls a "monstrous concrete prison" which has been "destroyed by its infidelity." Certainly, the album is run through with a wistful melancholia, with lyrics that reference the city's dead machinery and empty warehouses. But there's a reason the album's title greets its listeners from the state and not the city: The record is a beautiful, sprawling homage to the self-described pleasant peninsula. (10/25/07) I have an after market handle that serves as a lift for my computer to allow the bottom of it to breath, but it still doesn't cool it enough, and the fans still come on. So, I thought the Notebook Cooler might do the trick. One of the features that I was excited about were the really quiet fans that are supposed to blow away the heat from the bottom of the computer. Well, the fans aren't quiet, and it doesn't cool off my computer. In fact, the fans were as loud, or louder than my notebook's fans. It also isn't very smart. You have to turn it on and off manually, instead of having a sensor that detects heat. The fans are loud, the internal design is lacking, and it really doesn't cool off the computer that much. In fact, it just blows warm air towards you if you're sitting next to it. About the only thing that's good about this is the aesthetic design. It may not be as introspective or moody as say Meredith or season one's album, but the liner notes say it best when they refer to the music as "deep, rabid, scary, not-cute and obsessive." I guarantee you'll get goosebumps and completely dig the music therapy being offered. I can back my overzealous plug 100 percent so let's get started.(Forgive me in advance if I take the "quick notes" approach here...I picked my top 13 favorite songs and couldn't go any lower because it's just so hard!) 1) "How to Save a Life" by the Fray--a perfect and lovely companion to Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars," the song that closes everything. The music featured on "Grey's Anatomy" packs a gentle punch and can blissfully remind you of why music is the only thing you can purchase that touches your heart and soul completely. Clothes, food, even books can't reach that spot deep inside you that yearns to be free. Think I'm exaggerating? Well then, listen to the opening track "Such Great Heights" by the Postal Service and tell me you don't levitate with tranquility off your living room couch... As for the second song, the delicious "Ruby Blue" by Roisin Murphy, if you don't feel rhythym coursing through your entire body, you might consider getting a doctor to look at you.
