Hi, Wish I knew how to sew. I paid someone to sew a flat and a fitted sheet together to make me a duvet just a few months ago. (I found her on Craigslist and paid her fifty dollars, if you want to know.) She did an awesome job, using buttons I found at a flea market for the flap. The best part is that she left two small slits in the seam at each corner of the bottom of the duvet. That helps considerably when pulling the duvet into the cover and matching seam to seam. Love it! Since fresh flowers aren’t always in the budget, and because I have a brown thumb, I started thinking about what I could do to brighten up our apartment with flowers without actually using flowers. Soon, the idea for some sort of pom pom flower started bouncing around in my head, and this is what I came up with. How to make pom poms? I googled around and found a number of tutorials, including several that use the cardboard donut method, which can be found here, here, and here. Unfortunately, I’m impatient and not particularly coordinated, so cardboard donuts were flying everywhere. My favorite method is found in the pom pom tutorial at Bella Dia. It's no secret that I love HeatnBond, it's a must-have for appliqué projects and is perfect for all kinds of no-sew fabric applications. But a lot of people don't realize you can use it with paper, too! I found these simple paper and fabric binders (made by Russell + Hazel) at a local shop here in Silver Lake. I like their clean yet sturdy design, and that they were made using 100% post-consumer materials. The large binder is Davey Board (think: heavy chipboard) and the smaller binder is board covered with green linen. They look beautiful as-is, but I thought they'd look even cooler with a few simple embellishments. So here's what I did. I picked out a few fabric scraps and ironed some HeatnBond Lite iron-on adhesive to the backs. Then I found a font I Iiked on my computer and printed out a phrase ("Home Ec." in this case) in 2" high letters. Materials: we bought a 3-pack of black headbands at Target for about $3. We bought fake flowers, for $3 to $4 per stem, and coordinating ribbon for $1 per roll from Michaels. Each headband will use between 1 and 2 yards of ribbon. Total materials for 3 headbands was less than $20. Just for comparison, a similar headband, like this darling one at CrewCuts is $16.50. To make: wrap the head band in ribbon using a hot glue gun to attach. We had the best luck keeping the ribbon smooth by starting it at each end of the headband and meeting where the flower would be placed. Here's a Christmas wreath so darling and dear, even Miss Crawford would approve. Take one of these... and bend it into the form of a circle. Then, grab your glue gun and as many round ornaments in varying sizes as you can find. You'll need about 80 in all. Whenever I do my tree, I like the more unusual shapes, so it's always the round ones I have left over. Even if you don't, though, you can always find them for reasonable prices at a discount retailer, especially after the holidays. To secure the metal cap to the ball, dab a little hot glue and press. That way, the cap will remain attached as the ornaments are strung. Next, untwist the end of the hanger, then string one ornament at a time, making sure to alternate the placement and colors as desired. Use smaller sizes to fill in the gaps! Check out the final result! To secure it to the door, I used the hook end of the hanger, together with a little wire. Then I covered it up with bubblegum pink satin ribbon and a bow. I picked up these drawers on Freecycle. They were salvaged from the kitchen of a 1940s house that was demolished—quelle horreur! (Have I mentioned that I adore homes built before 1950?) My original plan was to put the drawers on wheels and use them as under-bed storage. Turns out, no two drawers are the same height, which would look janky. So I tried stacking them vertically instead. You could also hang these drawers on the wall as individual shadowboxes. You could even add shelves inside each drawer. Supplies primer 2 coordinating paint colors decorative or wrapping paper (I got mine at Paper Source) découpage glue (I used Mod Podge) drywall screws wood filler Tools paintbrush drop cloth scissors or craft knife, straight edge, and cutting mat tape measure or yardstick brayer drill sand paper vacuum or tack cloth 1. I think it's an ideal way of decorating gifts for men and boys who (let's be honest now) probably have no interest in a "pretty" or "chic" looking parcel and can't undo a ribbon to save their lives. This is certainly the giftwrapping idea which has had the most positive response from my boyfriend! First up you need to make some letter templates. Print out the letters you need using your computer - you'll need a pretty big font size but this will depend on the size of the presents you're wrapping, and remember to set them as "outline" to save ink!
