If one thing refuses to respect sovereign borders, it is the environment. Not surprisingly, environmental degradation and preservation have emerged as major issues in globalization studies. In many parts of the world, the accelerated economic development brought by globalization has produced negative environmental impacts. Examples abound: global warming caused by increased industrial pollution; privatization of 'public' resources such as water; the clearing of land or marshes to make way for farmers trying to eke out more profits on the international markets or for multinational companies looking to build new factories. However, growing global awareness and campaigns by environmental groups are also having some impacts in saving ecosystems and endangered species. The Joint Program combines the capabilities of two pre-existing MIT research centers: the Center for Global Change Science (CGCS) and the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research (CEEPR). We've mentioned Mascoma a couple of times recently in relation to the cellulosic ethanol conversion technology developed by Prof. Lee Lynd at Dartmouth College that they have been set up to commercialise. The latest news is that they have received a $14.8 million award from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). This will allow them to build and operate a cellulosic biomass-to-ethanol demonstration. The proof of concept facility is set to be built in Rochester, New York pending approvals and agreements. A consortium that includes International Paper Co., Cornell University, Clarkson University, Genencor and the Natural Resources Defense Council will partner with Mascoma to support the project. The biomass feedstock required for the plant is set to be sourced from a variety of products including agricultural and/or forest waste, paper sludge, wood chips, switch grass and corn stover. Today's electricity landscape is different. Now there are options. In 1998, some 30 million American utility customers began choosing their power suppliers. Customers in California and parts of New England could decide which company to buy their electricity from, which brand to buy, and what prices to pay. In other states, utilities offered "green pricing," allowing customers to direct some of their electric bill toward clean, renewable energy, like solar and wind power. Today, about 75 million electricity customers in 42 states have the option to buy green power through their utility or an alternative power supplier, according to the government's National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The Bush administration has decided to propose listing the polar bear as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, putting the U.S. government on record as saying that global warming could drive one of the world's most recognizable animals out of existence. The administration's proposal -- which was described by an Interior Department official who spoke on the condition of anonymity -- stems from the fact that rising temperatures in the Arctic are shrinking the sea ice that polar bears need for hunting. The official insisted on anonymity because the department will submit the proposal today for publication in the Federal Register, after which it will be subject to public comment for 90 days. Identifying polar bears as threatened with extinction could have an enormous political and practical impact. They're the folks who keep telling you there's no such thing as human-induced climate change, that the whole climate thing is just a greenie enviro plot, that actually doing something to reduce emissions will cost too much and accomplish nothing. Hey, let's all just keep pumping out the carbon. Here's an idea. Take them to the movies. Take two climate skeptics to The Great Warming and see what happens. We're betting there will be an attitude change. How to get them there? Drag 'em. Tell them that Keanu and Alanis are in it (how cool is that?)
