Fancy and utilitarian bags alike have been used by men and women throughout the ages, and their styles have changed with the tides of fashion. These two books by experienced craft designers reflect that vast spectrum by featuring an eclectic mix of projects for retro, ethnic, and contemporary chic bags. Galvin combines basic leathercraft with embellishments from other media to make mostly large and colorful bags. Tudor's interest in textile arts is evident in her small and elegant purses, many inspired by historic examples. Paul Getty Museum's holdings in French manuscripts from the ninth to the eighteenth century. This volume includes full-color reproductions of masterpieces from such works as a bible from ninth-century Tours; a sacramentary attributed to Nivardus of Milan from the first quarter of the eleventh century; the Shah Abbas Bible, made in northern France about 1250; a book of hours made in theatelier of the Bedford Master in Paris about 1450; and a book of prayers of the mass, written and illuminated in Paris by Jean Pierre Rousselet about 1720-30. The Hastings Hours is one of the finest of these to have survived. Intimate in scale and richly decorated with miniatures from the life of Christ and of the saints, it was made in the Netherlands by expert craftsmen during the last quarter of the fifteenth century. It was commissioned for the Benedictine Abbey of Sherborne in Dorset by Richard Mitford, Bishop of Salisbury 1396-1407, and Robert Bruyning, Abbot of Sherborne 1385-1415. The scribe was a Benedictine monk named John Whas, and the chief illuminator was John Siferwas, a Dominican friar and a leading artist of the 'International Gothic' period. Bourdichon was the court painter to four successive French kings, including Louis and his predecessor, Charles VIII. The manuscriptwas originally illuminated with twelve large calendar miniatures and two dozen full-page miniatures, but by the seventeenth century the Hours of Louis XII had been dismembered so that the large miniatures could be enjoyed separately as individual paintings. In recent years sixteen of these imageshave been located, including the portrait of the king that served as the book's frontispiece. This catalogue, which accompanies an exhibition at the J.
