The book goes into detail about all the various apple related health problems - cardiovascular, reproductive, even psychological (apparently, apple shapes suffer from more stress and depression - yet pear shapes suffer from more body image problems?!?) Additionally, there seemed to be a lot of words of encouragement for pears and virtually none for apples - and since apples are apparently at such a higher risk for all of these unpleasant conditions (again, everything from psycholgical to hormonal to vascular) aren't we the ones that need the words of encouragement? It didn't make me feel too good to read that even if I lose as much weight as I possibly can (and do it in the healthiest manner possible), I'm still an apple shape and therefore still at a higher risk for the above said problems. I find that hard to believe. If you're pear shaped and don't like your body, read this book - I guarantee... See less

The book centers on the concept of how fast we really do make judgments, called "thin slicing", and how deeper analysis can sometimes provide less information than more. It is all about cognitive speed. The concept of "thin slicing" is dissected and explained. What I found fascinating, and also common sense, is that we process information on a subconscious level, "behind the door", and process so holistically that to over analyze can actually hinder our ability to make decisions. Several key points are applicable in business. One of the in depth studies looked at a military leader who was particularly successful. One of his more poignant observations was that a great leader needs to let the people do their work. There have been many pages where, like in a conjurer's trick, the author sprang up from the printed words and took shape at my side as a sort of domestic conteur, accompanying me while slowly walking around my kitchen's table where I use to read books in a slow, tacit peripatetic rite, away from the TV set and the PC.
