The original was crafted near Philadelphia around 1835 of approximately 2,900 printed-cloth diamonds using the time-consuming English template method. These paper templates – cut from pieces of old letters, ticket stubs and receipts – were basted to the fabric to ensure perfect placement before meticulously hand stitching the quilt together. Often, bits of paper were left behind, creating a literal paper trail of the robust history behind its making. Over 30 patterns of fabric form the octagonal rings that radiate from a central eight-pointed star.
