(01/31/07) Amazon.com Snow Patrol are frequently compared to Coldplay in the press, which seems strange as they write far better songs and do not appear to be quite so self-hating, nor as rich. Their delightfully dour little pop songs do touch on the melancholic side of things, but the lyrics are wonderfully slice-of-life descriptions. Singer/lyricist Gary Lightbody gives a shout-out to Sufjan Stevens when on the punchy "Open Your Eyes" he sings, "The anger swells in my guts." Perhaps a better comparison would be American indie-rock act Sebadoh? Regardless, this band continues to surprise. If you went to see this mixed Scottish/Irish group on tour after hearing their wistful, breakout third album Final Straw, you might have been a bit confused by the rock juggernaut confronting you. Eyes Open is their most straightforwardly rock record yet, and thanks in large part to producer Garret Lee, it's their best. If there was ever perfect music to get lost to while driving around confused about a...See less

(01/31/07) first album Hopes and Fears went eight times platinum in the UK and scored gold in the USA, thanks to huge hit ballads like Everybodys Changing, Somewhere Only We Know and Bend and Break. This follow up album changes the formula completely, and although a great effort musically and lyrically, it doesnt have a similar number of radio-friendly pop songs like its predecessor. If this will affect sales will soon be known, but fans of the group will continue to be impressed by their sheer musical genius, the songs this time being heavily infused with electronica for a darker sound than ever before. Sounding more like Enigma in places, with large spoonfuls of U2 and Queen thrown in for good measure, this album isnt as instantly likeable like the first, but grows on you after a few repeats. First single and lead off track Atlantic has an incredible drum effect running through it and some terrific lyrics And if I need anything at all / I need a place that's hidden in the deep /...See less

(01/31/07) this album first came out, I wasn't sure whether to get it or not. I had 'White Lilies Island' and ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. But 'Shiver', the lead single, seemed to me to leave much to be desired. But when I previewed her album at HMV, I was impressed. Most of the songs on this album are consistently good and catchy. My favorites: Sanctuary Satisfied Honeycomb Child When You're Sleeping I Won't Be Lost I think 'Sanctuary' would've done really well if it had been released. Everything about that song is awesome. It reminds me of 'Sunlight' from White Lilies Island. 'Satisfied' starts off really nicely -- unfortunately I think the chorus isn't as nice as the stanzas. I felt as if a stronger chorus could've been used instead. But the instrumentals on this song are very well done. 'I Won't Be Lost' is cheesy, but it's a great song. The guitars are great, and the entire song has this relaxing effect. 'Honeycomb Child' is the most unique song on this album. It may be the most distant track out of...See less

(01/31/07) It remains beyond belief that Texas never found the following they so rightly deserved here in the U.S. When I discovered their first albim, SOUTHSIDE, I was immediately hooked and have not missed a release since. They have proved able song writers turning out an impressive body of infectious rock/pop. With REDBOOK, the group is at its apex. Stand out tracks include "Getaway", "Can't Resist", "Just Hold On" and the stunningly gorgeous "Sleep." I belive this album and SOUTHSIDE are the perfect bookends to an incredible span of musical creativity and genius. Comment | Was this review helpful to you? (Report this)See less

(01/31/07) Amazon.com Australian-born Keith Urban, hot off the double-platinum success of his 2002 sophomore album, Golden Road, is kind of like contemporary country's Tom Cruise. The kid is just so unjustly talented, likeable, and good-looking that it's hard not to hate him. But such jealousy is apt to melt into begrudging admiration and affection after a quick listen to this third album. True, some of Urban's self-penned adolescent love laments and bright-eyed paeans to life in the slow lane do sound a bit callow and derivative. But, with his resolute tenor and his dazzling lead guitar work, he breathes real pain and passion into moving confessionals like Matraca Berg's "Nobody Drinks Alone," "Tonight I Wanna Cry" (a heart-rending ballad co-written by Urban), and a gentle Rodney Crowell gem called "Memories of Us." --Bob AllenSee less

(01/31/07) Amazon.com It's tempting to read these songs--many about hope in the face of potential heartbreak--as an adjunct to Keith Urban's own tabloid-fodder life, which lately reads "ex-junkie country star marries Nicole Kidman, enters rehab." But his three previous albums have similar dark undertones. That would also be an underestimation of Urban's creative powers, which are broad enough to balance assembly-line Nashville pop with emotionally fine-tuned artistry. Breezy rockers like "Faster Car," sweet hooky ballads like "Shine," and readymade big-chorus hits like "Once in a Lifetime" rub elbows with more complex numbers like "I Can't Stop Loving You"--an essay about sad courage that starts with an acoustic guitar and adds instrumental textures as it unfolds--and "Stupid Boy," a tale of loss and self-discovery. It's no coincidence that both those songs climax with Urban's own crying guitar solos. As a player, his bold, midrange-heavy tone complements his most nuanced vocal performances....See less

(01/31/07) I'm a big fan of all of Michelle Branch's pop/rock solo albums. I still want another solo album from Michelle, but I can't complain at all about Stand Still, Look Pretty. Largely produced by John Leventhal, the production is polished, but not slick enough to overpower the good musicianship going on here. Michelle and Jessica Harp harmonize very well because of their similar voices. Sometimes it's difficult to tell them apart. The album is quite serious, but ends up with the humorous "Crazy People." Without that song to lighten things up, I would have reduced the CD's rating a bit. Finally, a little of Michelle's pop and folk styles do come through on songs like the title track and "Rain." Great job, Michelle and Jessica! Comment | Was this review helpful to you? (Report this)See less

(01/31/07) Sitting around with a couple of friends two years ago, watching the finale of the first season of Nashville Star, I made a prediction....even if she didn't win, Sony would sign Miranda Lambert. There was no way they would pass up the chance to nurture someone so talented at such a young age - she was just too good an investment! Now, two years down the road, here we are with Lambert's debut disc KEROSENE....on Epic/Sony! And what a debut it is! Upon first listen, you might mistake it for the third or fourth release from someone in their thirties, versus the first release of an artist still in their early twenties. Things kick off with the percolating alt-country title track, sort of the female version of a Steve Earle rocker. With it's chiming guitars, pounding percussion, harmonica riffs and snarled "Ha!", this track could very well be the feisty musical younger sister of Earle's "I Feel Alright" (I particularly love the line "Dirty hands ain't made for shaking"). An awesome way to...See less

(01/31/07) Just as empty and generic as their previous album. Decided to give it a listen because of some insane impulse to give this band another chance. I said it once and I'll say it again: being able to sing loudly does not make you talented. Amy Lee's voice is still highly overrated, the music is still terrible, and the lyrics are completely uninspired (I don't know what's worse, the deviantART-like suburban teenage angst lyrics on Fallen or spoon feeding the listener like the lyrics on this album do). At least now there's not the whole "oh, we might be Christian but then again no" garbage. However, the brownie points awarded for that are taken away in surplus because of the way they butchered my favorite Mozart song in Lacrymosa. Way to go, guys! What it comes down to: this band fails at having decent, or even acceptable, vocals, instrumentation, or lyrics. This album really isn't worth your time or your money, unless cheap pop is your thing, in which case you will love this album to...See less
