The blooms are a brilliant, warm-toned orange-red, and keep coming from early summer right into fall. For sheer color contrast and long bloom, you can't beat this fabulous new Canna! I must admit that I have a soft spot for 'Australia' (also known as 'Feuerzauber') because I spotted it 5 years ago in a grower's garden and have been patiently cultivating the stock ever since. 'Red October' not only boasts deep claret-colored leaf stems from spring till frost, but when its lavender blooms arise in late summer, their stalks are a rich burgundy-purple too! Its dramatic, leathery, tongue-shaped fronds of dark green each boast a double row of spores resembling a centipede (the translation of its Greek species name, "scolopendria"), and arise from a strong central rhizome. With good drainage and plenty of humus, this Phyllitis quickly reaches its mature size of 18 to 24 inches tall and wide, a lovely choice for the border, patio garden, or as a specimen in any shady spot. Hart's-Tongue Ferns have the reputation of being limestone-dependent, but I have had success with them in slightly acidic soils. They are a fine choice for rock gardens, but are perhaps happiest in moist, shady woodland settings. They require good drainage, and must not be overwatered. If so, we can't imagine how it could improve on the clean lines, pure white color, and sweet aroma of this long-time favorite! Fully 10 inches across, these wide-open blooms are beautifully set with handsome auburn anthers and fresh-green throats. Up to 8 blooms open on each stem. The effect is of dazzling clean color -- and each bloom lasts a week or more! 'Casa Blanca' is borne on strong stems (great for cutting!) from mid- to late summer. Why is this 1993 winner of the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society so seldom seen in today's gardens? Certainly it has never been bettered for color strength, adaptability, and staying power. Its bloom season begins a bit earlier than most others, which is all to the good for those of us who simply cannot have enough Red Hot Pokers bobbing in the sunny summer garden. It laughs at heat and drought, improving in adaptability with each passing season. We can only conclude that it is overdue for a revival, and we intend to begin it right now. It's a whole new day for Passiflora with the introduction of 'Sherry,' the first of the proposed new Darkhorse series of ultra-compact, very heavy-flowering varieties from breeder Frank Moser. Grown especially for container culture, 'Sherry' will climb a small trellis or dangle lushly from a hanging basket or windowbox, setting magnificent ruby-red blooms highlighted by black and white filaments along the way. This tropical perennial blooms all summer, often beginning in spring in warmer climates and continuing into autumn. The flowers have a substantial texture, giving them good holding ability, and they open plentifully either in sun or shade, though we suggested a bit of shade to help that glowing dark red color to "pop." (05/22/09) The stems begin green and then darken to black with the passing weeks, while the leaves remain deep green! Wayside gardeners have been asking for Black Bamboo for years now, and we've been scrambling to grow enough of this rare plant to make it available. At last the wait is over, and the sultry tones and multi-purpose evergreen (or should that be "everblack"?) habit can be yours! New spring canes emerge bright green and steadily darken, first to a smoky gray, then to a pure ebony that just gleams. Meanwhile, the handsome 4- to 5-inch leaves remain dark green, for a wonderful two-tone effect. Because this Bamboo is evergreen, the show gets even better next spring when you've got your older black canes offsetting the new green ones! This Black Bamboo is less invasive than others, but bear in mind that over time it WILL form a thick grove if not trimmed back.
