It's hard to put this one into words. I mean, how can a review do justice to David Lynch at his abstract, surreal, impressionistic best? Talk about the story, the direction, the music? Comment on the dialogue or compliment the lighting? Mention how stunning Naomi Watts's performance is? You've got me, I don't know. I will say this: Mulholland Drive isn't for everyone. It sees Lynch at his most obtuse and wilfully strange, and if ever a film didn't pander to its audience, this is it. Don't expect easy answers from this one. Even Lynch fans might not like it on their first viewing (I know I didn't), but it has a way of haunting you, of demanding that you turn it over and over in your mind, of insisting that you try to crack open its mysteries. Actually, I was bothered by how judgemental, accusatory and condescending some parents were as they "dis-owned" and gave-up on their children because of their children's gender issues. The discreet use of situation appropriate humor took the "edge" off in many serious situations and that made the experience even more profound. I felt great compassion and empathy for the main character because of her sense of being "forced" into disingeneous feelings that caused her to question her own sanity and place in life.
