(01/01/07) I was needing a new mixer and commented to my husband what I really would like and he said that he would pick one up later on. That evening I went surfing and found one that was a step up from what we had seen earlier - at the same price! I bought it and then told him. The day that it arrived I made bread. It is the first time in years and I loved how easily the Kitchen Aid worked. It is noiseless in comparison to so many other mixers and it has handled everything that I have put it through so far....from biscuits and breads, to candies of different kinds. I love it. (01/01/07) I was fortunate enough to attend a talk by David Allen Sibley at the Princeton University Bookstore a couple of weeks ago. He's a shy person, but once he starts talking about his favorite subject (birds, of course), he's as talkative as the most garrulous of people. Even in person, then, his knowledge of all minutiae of the avian world is staggering. That doesn't mean he doesn't understand the common pitfalls of the struggling, novice birder who wants so much to identify that giant bird with the colors of a goldfinch or the raptor as small as a songbird. He told us a couple of amusing stories about bird misidentification, one of which involved a mistake he made years ago... which just goes to show that if Mr. Sibley can make a birding mistake, there's hope for the rest of us. Anyway, "Sibley's Birding Basics" does, indeed, serve as the introduction to his bestselling field guide that he'd originally hoped to include in the field guide. He covers all the essential bird identification...See less

(01/01/07) From Publishers Weekly For some people, bird watching is a compulsion that can become more important than friends, family or career. Richard Koeppel is one of those obsessive birders, and in this candid book, his son shares his story, painting his father as a tragic figure who passionately wanted to become an ornithologist but became the doctor his parents wanted him to be instead. Not surprisingly, Richard's medical career never satisfied him, and he gave it up to become a "Big Lister," one of a group of highly competitive birders who travel the world making lists of their sightings. Over the years he spotted more than 7,000 different species, a number achieved by fewer than a dozen others. Nature writer Koeppel fleshes out his account of Richard's 50-year bird-watching odyssey with facts about this ritualized, expensive sport, including its history, the rules and technicalities of listing, the people and organizations devoted to making the lists, and questions of taxonomy. His hope,...See less

(01/01/07) Rothenberg writes with an easy intimacy, but if one takes him at his word, the intimacy that means most to him comes not by means of words but of music, and less by means of music as such than by an improvisatory exchange between, usually, himself on his clarinet, and someone else on whatever instrument the other person is using. Given this driving urge, it seems inevitable that Rothenberg should want to cross the barrier between those most musical of creatures, the birds, and those with the most productive curiosity, the humans. His own curiosity leads him first to the birds and then to the human experts in birdsong. He gives vivid descriptions of these researchers' extraordinary devotion to their work. I especially enjoyed his description of the ability of the composer Olivier Messiaen to hear, transcribe, and whistle the complex songs of a bird he had never heard before. Although, like a few of the researchers - Donald Kroodsma, for example - Rothenberg believes in the innate...See less

Affectionately known to locals as "Pale Male," the hawk courts, breeds, and hunts as its devoted urban fans root for its survival. (01/01/07) Book Description Caw of the Wild is an in-depth exploration into the intriguing and complex behavior of one of North America’s most intelligent, but often reviled, birds—the American crow. As a passionate observer, author Barb Kirpluk shares her extraordinary and fascinating findings while tracking three urban crow families through their daily existence. By befriending the birds and gaining their trust, Kirpluk shares many observations on subjects such as: * The language of crows * Crow habits and social relationships * The endearing personal relationships that evolved and allowed her to learn from the birds Kirpluk brings to life the unforgettable characters of these birds by combining anecdotal tales and recent scientific literature. (01/01/07) I first heard of Lisa through her affiliation and performances with Celtic Woman and found myself entranced by her voice and her beauty. Along with the 4 other performers on Celtic Woman, Lisa is a consummate performer and a thoroughly memorable talent. This solo performance album has several recognizable tunes from the Celtic Woman show and a few songs I'd never heard before. Perhaps it was my love for the original album (and having seen the performance on DVD first), but I found the newer songs less captivating than the others. Lisa's vocals are still warm and bright, and the shine of her talent--and love for the music--is evident throughout the CD. Fans of Celtic Woman should recognize such pieces as "Siuil A Run", "May It Be", and Lisa's hallmark, "Send Me A Song." Her vocals are thoroughly captivating. There are a couple tracks where her voice nearly gets lost in the choral background, and "The Deer's Cry," while lyrically inspiring, is not as engaging than the other tracks....See less

(11/26/06) Having begun working with birds of prey (in a rehabilitation center) in the last couple of years I have searched for books that gave more personal insights into the practice of falconry. Mr.O'Brien certainly knows his subject and does a fine job of describing the sport and the birds themselves. His accounts of hacking (early training) young peregrines in particular are excellent. I found his descriptions of what can go wrong, as well as right, in the caring and training of these birds quite illuminating and engrossing. His use of falconers-speak is well balanced with the story and the annotations quite helpful for those unfamiliar with the sport. I unfortunately found the overall concept of a man in midlife attempting to convince the reader that he is on a quest for some sort of middle age epiphany a bit trying. His relationship with his wife - an anesthesiologist who spends the majority of her time in a sleep deprived state, taking hospital call, and generally supporting his rather...See less

(11/26/06) This cd continues where the first "Legends" cd left off, exploring the moods and myths of the Celtic goddess. Songs bring you to another time yet are contemporary as well--an interesting melding of worlds, spiritual and sensual. I like "Answer Me With Silence" and "Goddess of the Sea Mist" personally the best but there really are no sleepers here. "Long Way Down" is a touching song, kind of a memorial for a loved one who leaves a big space behind. That one gets me every time. Both cds are highly recommended. I have found that I play them often--it helps create a special mood. Comment | Was this review helpful to you? (Report this)See less

(11/26/06) This is a very barebones approach for a nature film. There is no narration or music at all, simply the footage of the kestrels and their surroundings. There isn't even an FBI warning or introduction, the footage just abruptly starts. The content is neither good nor bad, it just is. It's a little bit like watching the footage that animal behaviorists use in their studies. Sometimes it can be a little boring, but if you really want to study falcon behavior then you might enjoy it. To give you an idea of what the footage is like, it goes something like this: You see a man walking around in the church graveyard. Then you see one of the kestrels sitting on the church watching him. You go back to watching the man walk around the graveyard. A person across the street gets into their car and drives away. You see one of the kestrels sitting on the church bobbing its head. You see a few children playing in their backyard nearby. You go back to seeing one of the kestrels up on the church...See less
