In 1977, Daryl and John were riding high on the success of the "Bigger Than Both of Us" album and it's #1 single "Rich Girl" and in August of that year put out "Beauty on A Back Street" which has a much more electric presence than its predecessor. Daryl and John both stated that they didn't like the production of this album (an artist is usually his own biggest critic) and they never really were until they started producing themselves in 1980 with "Voices". There are a lot of signature songs here, plenty that would have been hits. The first release "Don't Change" was released as a remix on 7" vinyl (strings were added at the intro) and others like "Why Do Lovers Break Each Other's Heart?", "Love Hurts (Love Heals)" "Bigger Than Both of Us" and "You Must Be Good For Something" all defined the sound that differentiates this album from their two prior RCA releases. "The Philadelphia Years" is by far the best-sounding album of Hall & Oates demos to ever come out. That's essentially because they came from the original master tapes provided by the original producer John Madara and aren't bootlegs as every other "demo" album that's come out since 1977 is. The sound is much clearer than even the Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs disc that came out a while back. No over-processing here, just good, clean sound from the genesis of the best duo of the rock era. The songs themselves are very simple productions, usually nothing more than drums, pianos, guitars, vocals and backgrounds. It's mainly on the folk-side than the rock side of things, musically. As far as the tracks themselves go, I'm surprised "The Provider", "The Reason Why", "Dry In The Sun", "I'm Tired of Wearing Buckskin", "Sally", "All Our Love" and "Months, Weeks and Days" didn't make it.... Hall & Oates' 70's releases are like musical schizophrenia...sometimes Pop, sometimes Rock, sometimes Soul or R&B. Even after they scored hits with "Rich Girl" and "Sara Smile," interested music buyers couldn't tell just exactly they were getting when they bought an H&O album. "Along the Red Ledge" continues this trend to (mostly) positive effect. The original "A" side is a collection of tunes in a Pop/Soul vein, though "Melody for a Memory" has it's share of rock guitar. This is the side where Daryl shines most as a vocalist. At times harsh and sardonic, then wistful and contemplative, his vocal arabesques are as impressive as they are unique to him. Of the two singles, "It's a Laugh" and "I Don't Wanna Lose You," the latter is the real winner, awash in a glorious Philly Soul arrangement. Even the gimmicky stereo separation of "The Last Time" seems to pay homage to R&B recordings of yore. With "Alley Katz," the album turns to a more guitar driven sound, akin to hard rock but miles... The BMG 2004 reissue of "Private Eyes" brings out the sharpness in what is already one of Hall and Oates' most important albums. There's not a clunker in any of the 11 original songs and two remixes, from the title track to the 12-inch version of "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)." The sound reproduction, cleaner than either the original RCA CD or 1996 BMG reissue, also lets listeners hear how the duo tried to balance technology and sound effects with live instrumentation, never letting one take over the other. Even when the song is almost all computer and synth -- "I Can't Go For That" -- it's done with such balance that it still sounds perfect a quarter century later. You can hear Daryl and John coming into their own as songwriters and producers. The reissue also gives the band's fans a chance to hear lost gems sounding better than ever -- especially "Looking For a Good Sign" and "Unguarded Minute." It is rare that I will write a review of a CD as I have always maintained that rock critics are the lowest form of critical life (I've never agreed with a rock critic in my life) and I never like to tell anyone what to listen to. However, in this case, I felt moved to show my suppor for the new H & O album. I saw them on their Marigold Sky tour and wasn't impressed with the material from that album. Recently, I purchased the Behind the Music CD (another excellent album) and it had some of the new tracks and I fell in love. Do it for Love is, top to bottom, an amazing album. Each time I listen to it, it gets better. The first three songs will grab you and Love in a Dangerous Time (I don't pretend to understand the lyrics, but I love the tune), the last track, will stay in your head. However, the stuff in the middle, gets better and better. These guys are as good as they were on H20 and Bing, Bang, Boom. Their melodies are smooth, their hooks strong, and the music just so much fun. I've... See less
